Following the longest weekend of the girls’ basketball season, Greencastle was greeted at home Tuesday by the arriving 3A No. 15 Danville.

A bigger and more physical Warrior team turned an early five-point deficit into a 14-14 first quarter and wore down the Tiger Cubs quickly, pressing the tempo to outscore the hosts by 23 in the middle quarters for a 70-50 win.

Greencastle (7-3, 4-1 WIC) got seven points early from Emma Hunter, including an up-and-under layup, a basket off a steal and a three, to take a 12-7 lead early on in the first quarter.

Danville (9-2) was already starting to press the action, getting three trips to the free throw line to slowly close the gap before a Camryn Rector three put the visitors ahead 14-12.

Gloria Brewer tied the game at 14-14 to close the period but when the senior next scored in the second quarter, the Tiger Cubs were down 29-14.

The Warriors forced nine turnovers out of the hosts in the period, assisting on 5-of-6 baskets as Rector, Isabelle Wooten, Emma Ancelet and Addison Davis all scored during a 15-0 run.

Brewer and Stephanie Morales hit a free throw each around an Evelyn Briones three but a Rector three closed the half with Danville in charge 32-19.

Two Brewer baskets and a Hunter three to start the second half briefly brought the lead down to eight at 34-26 but a 10-0 Warrior run pushed the lead back out to 18 while a 9-0 run to close the period gave the visitors a 56-33 lead after three quarters of play.

The Tiger Cubs were able to get to the line 14 times in the final quarter, hitting 12 foul attempts, but Rector the last two of her eight threes to not allow the hosts to cut into the deficit.

Rector led all scorers with 26 points and was one of four Warriors in double figures as Wooten scored 14 points, Davis added 13 points and Ancelet chipped in 12 points.

Brewer led Greencastle with 15 points with Hunter adding 14 points and Briones scoring 12 points.

Greencastle finishes the week with a road game at South Putnam as part of a boy/girls varsity doubleheader Friday night beginning at 6 p.m.
