Shirley Sue Baker, 86, of Bainbridge, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, at Mill Pond Health Campus.

Shirley was born in Greencastle on April 5, 1936, the daughter of Fred N. and Hazel P. (Pelfrey) Thompson.

She was a graduate of Bainbridge High School.

Mrs. Baker was a member of Bainbridge United Methodist Church, a state officer with Eastern Star, and a recipient of two Sagamore of the Wabash awards.

She worked as state vice chairman for the Republican Party of Indiana for 13 years until her retirement in 2002. She was a commissioner for the BMV for four years and head of personnel for the Indiana State Highway Department for four years. Prior to that, Shirley owned and operated Shirley’s Flower Shop in Bainbridge for six years.

Survivors include her four children, Jeretta Reynolds (Doug), Joe Baker (Rosie), Janet Lane and Joyce Reed; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jeral S. Baker; and her granddaughter, Jaycie Kim Lane.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 19 in Union Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Greg Hammond officiating.
