Tigers use middle quarters to bounce Owls

Sunday, January 15, 2023

The DePauw Tiger women’s basketball team dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring the Kenyon Owls 44-18, to cruise to an 82-54 victory at Neal Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon in NCAC action.

The Tigers came out a little sluggish to start the affair, not uncommon for a 1p.m. tip off. The Owls would lead for a good portion of the opening quarter. Kenyon led 12-9 after a four point play as Bela Krslovic drained the three and hit the foul shot. DePauw would close out the period on a 13-3 run, including three-straight baskets from Mya Shannon, as the hosts led 22-15 after one.

The Tigers would slowly pull away as their defense started to lock down, holding the Owls to just six points in the second period. On the offensive side, DePauw began to heat up from the field. Scoring inside and out, they had Kenyon on its heels. Six different Tigers scored as they showed their balance, stretching the advantage to 24 at the break.

Sophomores Moira McGinley and CC Condra turned it up in the second half, combining for 15 points in the third quarter and the rout was on. The duo kept attacking the basket on getting to the foul line, shooting 13 foul shots in the third.

As DePauw went deeper into the bench, Kenyon got some things going offensively. The Tigers, who had eleven different players get into the scoring column, showed their depth though. The Owls could not cut enough into the cushion to make a serious threat as DePauw went on to the 82-54 win.

The Tigers had several career-high performances on the day. McGinley led all scorers with 20 and Condra added 13 as both were personal highs. Shannon added 14 and Riley Mont 10 as four Tigers reached double figures. Mont added a career best 11 rebounds on the day as the Tigers outrebounded the Owls by 20.

DePauw moves to 9-7 on the campaign and more importantly 4-1 in conference play, just one game back of first. With only three upperclassmen, the Tigers seem to be starting to hit their stride.
