No new candidate filings as Feb. 3 deadline looms

Thursday, January 26, 2023

With the deadline to file as a candidate in the 2023 Greencastle municipal primary election looming a week from today, no new candidates had filed their intentions as of Thursday afternoon.

Inactivity has prevailed for a week now as incumbent Darrel Thomas and independent Derek Jorgensen were the last candidates to file last week, both seeking at-large seats on the seven-member City Council.

Thomas is second current GOP councilman to put himself in consideration for one of three Republican at-large nominations in the May 2 primary, joining the longest-serving Council member on record, current President Mark Hammer.

By filing as an independent, Jorgensen will not appear on either May primary ballot but will appear on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.

A Republican primary slate currently includes current city Clerk-Treasurer Lynda Dunbar for mayor, Mikayla Johnson for clerk-treasurer, Hammer and Thomas for at-large seats and Stacie Langdon for Second Ward councilor.

Meanwhile, Third Ward Councilor Veronica Pejril remains the only Democrat primary candidate as she seeks a second term.

City positions on the ballot in May and November include mayor, clerk-treasurer and all seven council seats, including the four wards and three at-large positions.

Those wishing to seek the Republican or Democrat nomination for a municipal office may pick up necessary paperwork at the Putnam County Voter Registration Office on the second floor of the Putnam County Courthouse or under the Secretary of State’s page at www.in.gov.

All paperwork must be filed with the Voter Registration Office by noon on Feb. 3.

The Voter Registration Office is open during regular hours of the Putnam County Courthouse, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Also, no candidates have filed for any of the contested positions in the towns of Bainbridge, Cloverdale, Fillmore or Roachdale, though most of these have traditionally been composed of independents.

Independents seeking office in the city or towns face a Monday, July 3 deadline to file paperwork for the general election.
