Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent crashes.

• At 8:16 a.m. on Saturday, Martorell Fuentes, 28, Louisville, Ky., was southbound on U.S. 231 on Waterworks Hill in a 2017 Freightliner M2 box truck registered to CH&M Transport.

There was snow and ice on the road. That, in combination with Fuentes’ speed, caused him to lose control and leave the east side of the road, overturning and coming to rest back in the roadway on its drivers’ side across both lanes of traffic.

Fuentes was removed from the vehicle by passersby. He suffered a minor head injury and was treated at the scene by Putnam County EMS, later being released from Putnam County Hospital.

The vehicle was towed, but the road was closed for about 90 minutes.

Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 9:51 p.m. Jacob A. Pohl, 19, Avon, was eastbound in the left lane of U.S. 40 in a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. Amanda E. Roberson, 23, Cloverdale, was also eastbound in the left lane in a 2017 Ram 4500 belonging to Putnam County EMS.

Pohl told Deputy Derek Line that as he approached County Road 525 East, he had to slow suddenly to make the turn. He said he was unsure he activated his turn signal, but assumed he did.

Roberson, who was transporting another medic and a patient without lights or sirens activated, said Pohl’s vehicle began to slow suddenly and did not activate his signal. She attempted to go into the westbound lanes to avoid a rear-end collision. However, Pohl then began to turn left and sideswiped the ambulance.

No one was injured in the collision.

Both vehicles were towed.

Line estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 8:40 p.m. on Friday, Justyn Black, 37, Roachdale, was eastbound on County Road 1100 North in a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse when he hit a deer.

Deputy Todd Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Tobias Vandergrifft, 65, Greencastle, was attempting to turn left onto State Road 240 from northbound County Road 650 East in a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, James Gram, 36, Greencastle, was eastbound in a 2013 GMC Terrain.

Deputy Patrick noted that Vandergrifft did not yield the right-of-way, turning into the path of Gram and causing the two vehicles to collide.

A passenger in Gram’s vehicle was taken to Hendricks Regional Health in Danville for treatment of a possible injury.

Both vehicles were towed. Patrick estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
