A fire destroyed a garage and significantly damaged a home in Warren Township on Wednesday.

As soon as it had concluded an emergency run with a medical helicopter, the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at about 4:10 p.m. for a structure fire at 2637 Skyline Dr. The smoke reportedly could be seen north of Interstate 70.

Cloverdale Township Fire arrived to the garage fully involved and smoke through the home’s roof as explosions occurred. Apparatuses and manpower responded from the Greencastle Fire Department, the Jefferson Township and Reelsville volunteers and the Putnamville Correctional Facility on a box alarm. Putnam County EMS and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office were also at the scene.

A handline was drawn from Cloverdale Township Fire’s tanker while it fed water to Greencastle Fire’s rescue truck and two other handlines. Firefighters made their attack and got the fire inside the home knocked out, while windows were broken to ventilate the heavy smoke.

The fire was marked out at about 5:30 p.m. as firefighters checked for extensions. While the power was cut initially at the breaker, Duke Energy came and pulled the meter. Smoke was later cleared from the home with a fan.

Cloverdale Township Fire Chief Kerry Shepherd related that the cause of the fire was likely a spark that caught fumes from a gas line. Motorcycles, gasoline and propane were inside the garage at the time of the incident.

While they sustained some second-degree burns, the homeowner refused treatment. None of the firefighters were otherwise reported injured in the operation.

While it was still standing, the home sustained extensive structural damage from the fire. As such, Shepherd provided that it was a loss, though some contents were able to be salvaged.

According to Putnam County GIS, the property is listed to Steven Warf.
