FILLMORE — Pigs and goats were killed in a shed fire that occurred in Fillmore Sunday evening.

With the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office first on the scene, a box alarm was dropped at about 5:20 p.m. for a structure fire at 62 Westwood Rd. Fillmore volunteer firefighters arrived to the small shed being fully involved with heavy smoke.

While firefighters from the Greencastle Fire Department came to the scene, the box alarm was disregarded once it was determined that no exposures were threatened. However, power lines were overhead and a pole was charred.

As a defensive attack, Fillmore Fire Capt. Darrel Bunten related that firefighters tackled the fire from the front to push it back on itself due to the wind. Handlines were fed from a hydrant and one apparatus.

The fire was marked out by 5:55 p.m. as salvage was then conducted. Meanwhile, Duke Energy secured the power.

Command of the scene was terminated at about 7:10 p.m.

Bunten said that four pigs and three goats succumbed to smoke inhalation in the incident. No injuries were otherwise reported.

With the shed considered a complete loss, Bunten estimated damages at roughly $15,000.

Bunten later told the Banner Graphic that the homeowner was attempting to burn wood chips when the wind blew the fire into the shed. As such, the fire was ruled as accidental.

According to Putnam County GIS, the property on which the shed stood is listed to Shannon Sibbitt.
