Robinson, Mustangs win pitcher's duel over Hassler, Tiger Cubs 1-0

On a cool, blustery day at Greencastle, the pitching was on fire.

Starters Jaylen Robinson for Edgewood and Ali Hassler of Greencastle both threw absolute gems, combining to give up only seven hits on the day.

The Mustangs got an RBI single in the fifth to score the only run of the day to give them a 1-0 WIC victory over the hosts Tuesday night.

Edgewood threatened in the first after a single and a walk with one out. Hassler then retired the next two batters to get out of a jam, striking out Madi Bland to close it out.

The Mustangs loaded the bases with one out in the second and looked poised to score. Hassler settled in and fanned the next two hitters to keep the game scoreless.

Greencastle went 1-2-3 in the opening two innings. Elise Lausee got the first hit for the Cubs in the third but was left stranded.

In the fifth, Edgewood was able to finally break through. With one out, Alayna Flinn doubled down the left field line. After another Hassler strikeout, cleanup hitter Meleah Vest singled to score Flinn to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.

A Gloria Brewer leadoff single gave Greencastle hope in the bottom of the fifth, but Robinson was equal to the task, retiring the next three Cub hitters, including two strikeouts.

Edgewood would put a runner on base each of the last two innings, but once again Hassler would leave them stranded as the Mustangs would leave nine runners left on base.

Greencastle had one more chance in the bottom of seventh. Kenzie Epley hit a shot to center that fell a few feet short of a game-tying home run, rolling into second with a double. Robinson, in the theme of the night, enticed two ground outs to pull out the conference victory for the Mustangs.

The Tiger Cubs fell to 9-8 on the season and 2-4 in the very competitive WIC. Hassler took the loss, allowing only four hits over seven innings, while striking out eight. Robinson took the win allowing three hits and also fanning eight.

Greencastle has a busy week as it travels to Indian Creek Wednesday, hosts White River Valley Thursday and travels to Riverton Parke Friday.
