Greencastle takes senior night win over Brown County

Tuesday, May 9, 2023

On Senior Night, the Greencastle Tiger Cub baseball squad honored seven players. Boyd Ensley got the start and threw three and two thirds strong innings, giving up just two runs while the offense pounded out 11 hits and three extra base hits to take a 10-5 Western Indiana Conference victory over the Brown County Eagles Tuesday night.

The Eagles got two men on in the first with the help of a walk and an error, but Ensley was able to retire the next two batters to get out of trouble.

Greencastle scored early. Chase Carrington and Nathan Sutherlin both singled. Carrington later scored on a wild pitch and Sutherlin would come home on a Sam Gooch single for a 2-0 lead after an inning.

They would tack on another run in the third. Carrington walked and stole second and Treyton Clark doubled to bring home Carrington.

Sutherlin then singled and appeared to bring in another run, but the runner did not step on home plate and was called out. Ensley kept the Eagles at bay until the fourth, giving up two of his three hits and plating two as the Eagles crept back into the game, trailing 3-2.

Greencastle added one in the fourth. Senior Ethan Hamm tripled and scored on a ground out by Owen Huff. Brown County would pick up two in the fifth. After a hit batsman and two singles, the game was tied at 4-4. Relief pitcher Owen Huff struck out the next two to end the inning.

The Tiger Cub fifth blew the game wide open. Clark singled to start it. Trevin Long was hit by a pitch and Jaylen Bushong walked. Senior Cooper Williams then stroked a big two-RBI single. Huff would also drive in a pair with a double in a five-run inning.

Greencastle scored a single run in the sixth when Long singled and advanced to third on two stolen bases. He would come home on an error by the catcher to add an insurance run.

The Eagles picked up a solo run in the seventh, but it would not be near enough as Greencastle took the final 10-5.

“Senior nights are kind of hard because you are not in the same routine. Ensley pitched a heck of a game tonight. It was great that there were some senior moments. Cooper Williams had a big single that drove in two,” said Tiger Cub coach Ben Wells

Huff drove in three runs on the night and Williams two. Eight different Cubs had hits on the night. Huff picked up the win and brought Greencastle back to .500 at 8-8. A matchup with North Putnam awaits Friday, weather permitting.
