Banner Graphic: How important are sports to you, and what have you learned from them?

Andrew Adams: “Sports are pretty important to me. I love the team aspect. It’s taught me leadership, confidence, how to be a team player and how to work well with others.”

BG: Talk about your sports.

AA: “Tennis was pretty successful. It was foreign to me but my cousin played it, so why not try out? This year, I had some good success at No. 3 singles. Wrestling I had nothing but bad luck with injuries, having two concussions in two weeks, which took me out for the rest of the season. I had a 20-7 record for four years, which is about as many matches as you get in a normal season. Pole vault is something I’ve had the most success at, been the most consistent and injury-free in.”

BG: What’s the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you in sports?

AA: “Probably getting knocked out in a wrestling event. I took a good hit against a 170-pounder wrestling at 152 pounds. It was funny to me at the time even though it was a serious thing.”

BG: What does your game-day routine look like?

AA: “I try to take care of my body and make sure it’s ready to go. It’s more about the day before: recovery, making sure I’m drinking fluids, eat well, sleep well and keep the right mindset the whole day.”

BG: You had a big PR at the WIC Boys’ Track Meet to win the event. As a senior, how awesome is to do that, especially going into sectionals?

AA: “It was so exciting. I had been stuck at the 11-06 mark for a good little bit with a mental block late in the season. That event seeded me first in the sectional and third in the regional and I have a shot to get to the state meet. It was also eye-opening to see what I can accomplish.”

BG: Do you have any favorite college/pro sports teams or athletes you follow?

AA: “I pay attention to Indiana University track, their pole vaulting crew, their wrestling team and basketball team. I look to see if there is anything they do I can work into my routine.”

BG: What else do you do at school besides things involving sports?

AA: “I’m involved in FCA but not too much as I work out at Putnam Park Road Course and sports have been my main thing.”

BG: What do you like to do outside of school and sports?

AA: “I race cross county ATVs, hang out with my friends and family. My family are my best friends, so anything they’re doing I try to tag along with.”

BG: Since you mentioned ATV racing, tell me about that.

AA: “Cross country ATV is a 10-12 mile course that you race for two hours, wherever they put arrows; you have 20 feet either side of the arrow, which is your course and you’re looking to beat the guys in your row. I’ve had some success here and there. I’m pretty good at finishing; we haven’t had two many DNFs this year but I’m not quite as competitive at the national level as I am locally.”

BG: What are your favorites in movies, books, TV and music?

AA: “If I was to watch TV, it would be ‘Night Court’ or ‘Friends.’ I like ‘The Sixth Sense,’ which is a good movie. ‘The Things We’ve Carried’ is a good book I’ve read. I also read a lot of books by Dave Ramsey.”

BG: Are you a person that wants to watch TV shows and movies, stream something from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok etc. or something else (gaming, reading, etc.)?

AA: “I’d probably do something with my family, something like a board game or card game. I’d also make sure my body is iced up, healthy and ready for the next day.”

BG: What is something you have never done before that you would like to do someday?

AA: “White-water rafting or skydiving.”

BG: What is your biggest fear?

AA: “Compromising myself for a situation that wouldn’t lead to anything.”

BG: You’ve been placed in charge of making dinner. What’s on the menu?

AA: “Probably fettuccine alfredo or chicken parmesean.”

BG: Do you have any pets?

AA: “I have a black lab named Stagger.”

BG: If you were to describe your personality in one word, what would that word be and why?

AA: “Unpredictable. I like to have fun with my friends but I’m usually the one to do the crazy thing first.”

BG: What has been your favorite place to visit?

AA: “Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.”

BG: What was your favorite school field trip?

AA: “The Stat Flight field trip we took just a couple of weeks ago. We got to learn about stat flight helicopters and what they do. We had to stop early because they had an emergency to attend to but it was cool to see them in actual action.”

BG: How important is support from your family and classmates to your success?

AA: “Not too important. If I were to quit sports because of an injury or something, it wouldn’t affect my family or classmates. I do it for my benefit and my teammates.”

BG: Describe your overall school experience both academically and athletically.

AA: “It was a very good school experience. I wouldn’t change it for COVID or anything else that went on. I got along with a lot of people, especially as a smaller school.”

BG: If your school was to offer a class it currently doesn’t, what would you want to see taught?

AA: “I’d love to seem teach a dancing school.”

BG: What are your plans for after high school, and what career are you headed toward?

AA: “I’d be heading towards cardiolody. I’ll be working on my undergrad, pre-med/biology, take my MCAT, go to medical school and study cardiology.”

BG: Is it difficult to keep up with your school work being an athlete?

AA: “Sometimes. It’s about time management and your ability to jump through hoops, two things I was gifted with from a young age.”

BG: Which particular classes and teachers have helped you the most in high school?

AA: “Mr. Wheeler in English and Mr. Hankee in math. Those were the two most influential teachers for me.”

BG: In the future, once you’ve established yourself, if you had your choice, would you want to live somewhere more remote, such as in the mountains or the countryside, somewhere more flashy like down on the beach or in the big city or in the neighborhood?

AA: “Definitely a little more rural, to have the land around me to do the things that I want to do.”

BG: Do you think high school has gone fast, and are you going to miss it?

AA: “It has definitely gone by in the blink of an eye. I will miss it but I’m looking forward to my next step in life.”
