Congressman Jim Baird

WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Biotechnology and Research Chairman Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) led his Hoosier House colleagues this week in highlighting several bipartisan Hoosier priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill.

“Hoosier farmers make up the backbone of America,” 4th District Indiana Congressman Baird said. “With more than 55,000 farms across the state of Indiana agriculture supports over 946,000 jobs and more than $193 billion in food and agricultural economic outputs. It is imperative that we pass a strong farm bill that protects our producers in order for them to continue providing safe, affordable, and abundant food, fuel and fiber to the citizens of this nation and people around the world.”

The letter was supported by the Indiana Farm Bureau, Indiana Beef Cattle Association, Indiana Corn Growers Association, Indiana Pork Producers Association, Indiana Soybean Alliance and Indiana State Poultry Association.

  • Hmm, the government subsidizing an industry. There’s a few words that Mr. Baird frequently uses to characterize China, Russia, and Democrats that additionally apply to this bill as well. The hypocrisy!!

  • Only the non hungry are against supporting those who attempt to feed the world.

  • The farm bill is, at its core, government sponsored wealth redistribution and governmental control (central planning)over an industry. If that’s not socialism I don’t know what is.

  • Koios, please don't complain with your mouth full.

Have to agree with Koios... Jim Baird is a socialist pig feeding at the taxpayer trough.

Beg, if you want to feed the world please go ahead and do so...out of your own pocket. Take donations if you want. But don't fool yourself into thinking that the Farm bill is a good thing or that Jim Baird is an upstanding guy.

  • Non Hungry need to go hungry

  • So, lets cut the bill by 82%. That should meet the needs of those who disagree.

-- Posted by beg on Wed, Jul 5, 2023, at 8:09 AM
  • You can cut it 99%, it’s still a socialist program.

  • I don't have a grasp on where this discussion is going, but if government subsides define a "socialist" program, then let's include medicine, education, communications, energy, transportation and its subparts: airlines, railroads, highways, and sea as socialist programs. And should we stop there? America and the world has benefited from the government's socialist investment/subsidies to an almost incalculable extent when it comes to NASA/military research. Even when a new military technology isn't weaponized, thankfully, we still reap the rewards, such as the internet, computer, micro-electronics and so on.

Yes, socialism and the inept level of bureaucracy associated with it is increasingly defining America and perhaps the rest of the world, whether we want to admit it or not.

  • Supporters and benefactors of the farm bill certainly don’t seem to want to admit it.

  • So, if the bill is socialist, I am glad you support it or are you proving the definition of big government- big government is spending I disagree with.

Since it seems you don't support it, I have the understanding you are against the nutrition programs in the bill.

    Interesting

  • In almost every Newsletter I get from Rep. Baird he mentions fighting the communists and socialists. Yet he proudly trumpets his support and lead work on this bill. Something doesn’t add up there. Or shouldn’t add up, whichever you prefer.

  • It does but it is hard for individuals who are beholden to their political theology to see there are solutions from across the spectrum.

I think it is interesting you are more bothered by a politician fighting against communists and socialists rather than the farm bill (definitely a wrong name) itself and what is good and not good in it.

  • beg, I agree with you 100 percent; to continue labeling it as a "farm bill" is somewhat misleading.

Koios wrote, "Supporters and benefactors of the farm bill certainly don’t seem to want to admit it." Okay, I'll admit it. Both my family and that of my wife's have benefited from agriculture subsidies.

  • You can’t fight against communists and socialists if you support socialist policies. That doesn’t make any sense.

-- Posted by Koios on Thu, Jul 6, 2023, at 2:36 PM
  • I find it hard to believe an individual can believe that effective impactful solutions can only come from one political theology.

Example- I was not a fan of President Clinton. I think the fannie mae/ sallie mae thing he did was a bad decision and it turned out to be a very bad one.

That being said, I thought there were other things he led the enactment of that were positive.

I was not a fan of President Trump on many levels. That being said, I thought his tax implementation was excellent.

I don't want communists in charge, nor do I want socialists in charge. I can support solutions that are socialist based within a representative/ proxy democracy if they are the best solution.

I also understand that when minds are closed, they don't have full vision due to the blinders that are being worn.
