Baird co-authors new law cutting taxes for active-duty military

Beau Baird

Hoosier military members are set to receive tax relief thanks to a new law co-authored by State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle).

Currently, active-duty service members are eligible for a $5,000 deduction from the state individual income tax. Under the new law recently signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, active-duty military members will receive a complete income tax exemption beginning in January regardless of their deployment status.

Baird said National Guard and reserve members already receive a $5,000 deduction, and a full income tax exemption when mobilized or on duty.

“Service members make so many sacrifices to protect this great nation,” Baird said. “Indiana has long stood as a welcoming state for veterans, and this law builds on our reputation and commitment. We hope this incentivizes service members to stay in our state or move here.”

According to Baird, other states, including Michigan and Kentucky, offer a full income tax exemption to all service members.

State Rep. Baird represents House District 44, which includes all of Putnam County and a portion of Montgomery County.

  • SSLLCC member here-

Well, I mean... this is just republican lawmakers pandering to their clueless voting base. Military were already getting a tax deduction up to $5,000, which would be an income of over $150,000/yr, so probably 99.9% of active Indiana military were already paying zero income tax before this bill. But thank heavens for Mr. Baird! We all know how hard it is for those making over $150,000, they definitely needed another tax break!

What's really disgusting is when it comes to eliminating income taxes, republicans will use this as an excuse to cut funding to other important things the government does, or else they'll need to raise other taxes. Sales and property tax increases which will raise the cost of food and rent, offsetting the income tax cut. Or, receive more federal tax funding to compensate, so federal taxes will increase. So, in the end, it looks like getting rid of income tax actually only helps high income earners.

That's why the U.S. house republicans are trying right now to pass a bill to get rid of the federal income tax and raise the sales tax to 30% on everything we buy!!!!! They're still trying to force us into their failed, purposefully deceptive hoax theory of trickle-down economics! You know, the fantasy they hypnotize people into believing that if we just eliminate taxes for business and high earners (the true reason why they want to get rid of income tax), they'll be so happy that they'll give the rest of us better pay and lower prices? And when has that ever happened? Never! Do they instead just keep that money for their own profit? Always! A famous quote about the theory of supply-side economics "If you feed the horse enough oats, some will pass through to the road for the sparrows"

Instead, what people actually need are regulations to help workers with things like compensation and safety, which is also what a union does! And we need price and profit caps on businesses to stop them from price gouging us like they're doing right now on our groceries and gas. All things that republicans are extremely opposed to. They want a regressive tax system where the less money we make, the more taxes we'll pay. Working class families (including a lot of military families) under this plan will see the total amount of taxes they pay annually actually go up, not down, and that is by design and the whole point! It's meant to help the wealthy and well-off and to hurt workers. In their mind, it's only fair that the poors pay more taxes, because they use more government services- the true definition of their term "fair tax".

Nevermind that these wealthy republicans made all their money by exploiting you as a worker (or a customer), and they're actually the number one reason why social welfare programs are even necessary!

  • Mr. Baird; How about working to lower taxes on senior citizens who are trying to stay afloat in this surge of inflation.

  • Sounds like someone described a wealthy SSSLLDC member/ leader

I say we lower taxes on everybody!

Better yet- I still believe it would cost efficient that when a person is born, they get a 1,000,000 dollar account to earn interest and it become available to that person when they turn 18. In exchange, no bail outs or other programs. All have equal chance to grow their free gift.

  • PutCoRes1963 it's not regular inflation, it's greedflation https://www.google.com/amp/s/fortune.com/2023/06/15/greedflation-economy-inflati...

Beg- it's not a free gift if everyone's been paying into it, isn't that what taxes are? When you make a claim on your insurance policy, do you call that a free gift???

  • I think you get my point from the language I specifically chose.

Much more importantly, as a self professed member of the SSSLLCD, do you agree or disagree with the concept I proposed?

    Why or Why not?

  • Yes please, let's give every American a million dollars to invest when they're born and by the time they're 18 they can just live off the profit, that would be sooo great! No one in the country would ever have to work again! Oh, wait........... will netflix still work? Dang it, I must have woke mind virus syndrome because I thought that was a good idea for a second, you got me!

  • There would be people who would still work because:

    1. they will blow their money

    2. Some people like to be active, achieve, and bring innovation that helps others.

But, yes, there are many people who are takers only

  • There will always be a small percentage of people that game the system for a handout, but if every decision to improve society is based on whether a tiny amount of people will get away with fraud then we'll eventually end up like North Korea.

Actually if you think about it, North Korea is a republican utopia- forced worship of military, police and the government leader, imprisoning your entire family if you criticize them, non-stop lies and deception, the working class living in poverty and starvation to support the wealthy while doing hard back-breaking work all day, every day until they drop dead... a conservative dream come true!

  • That is the definition of Utopia in the SSSLLC playbook also.

I have often stated that the SSSLLC and far right are the same people

-- Posted by beg on Mon, Jul 17, 2023, at 4:20 PM
  • That makes absolutely no sense.

-- Posted by Raker on Mon, Jul 17, 2023, at 4:57 PM
  • beg, is there any possibility, however minute, that you are confusing the far-right with absolutists? They are not the same. I don't think the word "far-right" has fallen to the level of being a pejorative, not yet.

Raker, your initial argument was persuasive before you entered the realm of the ridiculous.

When you two fine folks are focused, you are entertaining, perhaps even informative.

  • Prince of Stardust Hills you think that's ridiculous? Look what the right does to people like Colin Kaepernick or the Dixie Chicks when they get criticized. Telling people to get out of the country if they don't like it. That's just a step or two removed from throwing people in jail, in my opinion. Trump had Michael Cohen thrown back in jail for writing a book that criticized him, didn't he? Republicans want to get rid of social programs that help people, that means more people going hungry and dying, and being mistreated by their employers. Where am I wrong? 100% facts

-- Posted by Raker on Mon, Jul 17, 2023, at 7:21 PM
  • I was referring to your remark concerning North Korea being a Republican utopia.

-- Posted by Prince of Stardust Hills on Mon, Jul 17, 2023, at 9:30 PM
  • I know you were, I was responding by pointing out just a few of many similarities between the GOP and a fascist dictatorship like North Korea. You only find this with conservatives and the right-wing, there is no similar comparison on the left, so I don't think it's ridiculous at all.
