BRAZIL – South Putnam got its girls’ golf season off to a solid start after defeating an incomplete Greencastle side Wednesday night at Oak Ridge GC.

Alie Newby pipped Mackenzie Lovett to medalist honors with a round of 48, the latter shooting 49, while Faith Wiggins and Bella Fanning both carded rounds of 64 as the Eagles shot 225 in their opening match of the season.

“It was a great opener,” South Putnam head coach Jill Newton said. “The course was in great condition, the girls played well and as we went into tonight with no expectations, we were looking for a baseline and now know where to go from here.

“The girls are happy with their scores and we’ll be ready to go next week.”

Grace Long led the Tiger Cubs with a round of 54 while Emma Callahan shot 61 and Hannah McLaughlin shot 64.

The result comes a night after Greencastle fell to Monrovia, who shot 228 at Deer Creek GC while the Tiger Cubs were also incomplete for the night.

Callahan shot 57 Tuesday night while Long carded a 62. Bulldog Mary Cox was medalist with a round of 52.

“Emma did better in the opener and shooting 57 at Deer Creek is pretty good,” Kingma said. “It didn’t happen (Wednesday) but the first match is something to build on.

“Grace had some bad holes but when she hits the good shots, she had a par and bogey against South Putnam and that’s three and four strokes of improvement. If you can get more shots on more than two holes, those numbers keep going down.”
