Longtime GHS English teacher Mike Meyer passes away
The 2023-24 school year at Greencastle High School started on a tragic note with the passing of longtime English teacher Mike Meyer.
Meyer reportedly died suddenly at home while getting ready for the first day of school Friday morning.
While the news had traveled around the community via social media and other means, Supt. Jeff Gibboney confirmed it with a message to parents in the school corporation about 3:30 p.m.
“It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of Mike Meyer, longtime English teacher and former football coach at Greencastle High School,” Gibboney said. “The GCSC staff sends our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to his wife Brenda, their children and all his extended family during this difficult time.”
The superintendent went on to detail the care that will be in place for students and staff when they return to school on Monday.
“School administrators implemented our crisis management plan,” Gibboney said. “We will continue to support our students and staff. Greencastle High School will have additional counselors and staff members available beginning Monday, Aug. 7.
“If your student needs help, please encourage them to reach out to a teacher or member of the GHS administrative team.”
A 1981 GHS graduate, Meyer was the oldest of five children of longtime DePauw baseball coach Ed Meyer and his wife Mary Ann, the brother of Anne, Pete, Patrick and Tony.
Following a lengthy stay in the college football coaching ranks, including three years as head coach at Hiram College in the early 2000s, Meyer returned to his alma mater in 2005 as an English teacher and football coach.
In all, he spent 18 years in the classroom at GHS and two stints as head football coach totaling 13 seasons.
Besides his siblings and wife Brenda, he is survived by four grown children — Maddie, Mallary, Jacob and Jordan. Daughter Mackenzie preceded him in death in 2018.
Services for Mike Meyer will be Saturday, Aug. 12 at Kresge Auditorium, 605 S. College Ave., Greencastle, at DePauw University Visitation will be 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. with service to follow at 1 p.m., led by Pastor Donnie Watson.
