CLOVERDALE – Rain on Monday foiled the attempt of Cloverdale and South Putnam to get through their scheduled girls’ golf match, prompting the teams to reconvene Tuesday at Clover Meadows GC to finish the round.

The Clovers would go on to win the match 235-247 even with the event truncated again for a few golfers due to showers that popped up near the end of the round.

“We talked about being mentally prepared because we were ready to play (Monday),” Cloverdale head coach Jamie Steffy said. “We had good tee shots off the start and you could tell we were focused.

“Having to take the time off with the match postponed, we talked about being as mentally focused as we were the previous night.”

“We struggled off the tee tonight,” South Putnam head coach Jill Newton said. “The flow of canceling (Monday) after completing a hole and coming back threw us off a little bit.

“We started off the season with four golfers but we’ve now doubled our total to eight golfers,” Newton pointed out as the team had added in several new faces since the team’s previous outing against North Montgomery and Covington. “They are learning how to play the game but we’re looking to grow the program and excited about the new members.”

Alie Newby took medalist honors for the Eagles with a round of 50 but the hosts earned the win with a reverse order charge as Kieria Allen shot 52, Autumn Wheeler came in on 58, Celeste Terrell shot 59 and Aliyah Maldonado came in on 66.

Mackenzie Lovett shot 61 for the visitors with Faith Wiggins carding a 64 and Bella Fanning shooting 72.

“We have a consistent team with four or five girls that can shoot in the low-to-mid 50s,” Steffy said about being able to secure the win despite an off night at the top of the lineup. “Aliyah definitely struggled today but it shows the kind of improvement we’ve made in the last couple of years.”
