Greencastle brushes aside Southmont in doubleheader

Instead of allowing a ball to trickle out of play, Greencastle's Micah Foss beats a Southmont defender to the ball to keep things moving during the Tiger Cubs' 3-0 win over the Mounties; Foss accounted for all three goals for the hosts, which came in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Greencastle swept a pair of soccer matches against Southmont Thursday night, the Tiger Cub girls winning 5-0 while the boys defeated the Mounties 3-0.

First half goals from Evie Briones and Ali Dobbs gave the hosts a 2-0 platform to build off of in the opening match.

Briones netted twice more for a hat trick while Riley Wainman fired in to round out the scoring as Greencastle moved to 7-0 on the season while Southmont fell to 5-4.

“For as good as we performed last week, we didn’t perform well on the field,” Greencastle girls’ head coach Scott Monnett said. “We couldn’t string together passes and I was growing increasingly frustrated with that.

“We’ve been hammering home our positioning and movement, high press and connecting passes in practice. Tonight, we did what we’ve been talking about for a week and it was a great response ahead of Saturday’s contest.”

Micah Foss scored all three goals in the boys’ match inside 20 minutes but the Tiger Cubs lost impetus from that point forward, allowing the Mounties to keep the deficit at three for the remainder of the match.

A red card for Greencastle’s Sam White was the major talking point of the second half as the senior misses Saturday’s match.

The Tiger Cubs improved to 8-2 with the win while Southmont fell to 2-5-1.

“We came out really well in the first 20 minutes, playing exactly the way we wanted to,” Tiger Cub boys’ head coach JD Sims said. “We didn’t come out with enough gusto against Danville Tuesday, so it was important that we came out and dominated from the start.

“We played well for the first 20 minutes, got a few goals and everyone started to get a bit greedy and wanted a piece. Our play dropped off a bit and the red card changed everything in the second half.”
