McCahill leads the way in hard fought victory for the Tigers against the Battling Bishops

Nathan McCahill completed 10 passes and two touchdowns as the DePauw Tigers (4-0) beat the Hiram Terriers (2-2) 28-7

The Tigers entered Saturday’s contest unbeaten. After multiple home games with convincing wins against various opponents, they extended their winning streak to four games out of four so far this season. This time around, the Tigers showed grit in having to fight hard for this win.

The Battling Bishops entered the game looking to continue their good form after confidently beating Wooster at home with a score of 49-20.

Ohio Wesleyan Head Coach Tom Watts’ squad lost last time around when facing the Tigers in a highly-competitive outing 22-21 last season. The visitors were hoping to push forward and win this time but in the end DePauw once again were composed and won in another tight affair.

Tigers struggled in the first half

This game was not a straightforward game like others have been before for the Tigers. DePauw struggled in the first half, specifically during the first quarter, but picked it up during the second quarter.

The Tigers opened the scoring with quarterback Nathan McCahill’s pass completion to wide receiver Robby Ballentine, who rushed 50 yards for a touchdown, kicker Joseph Sullivan adding the extra point to make it 7-0.

The Battling Bishops tied the score at 7-7 with a touchdown from wide receiver Tyler Webb and a good kick from kicker Sean Putt.

The Tigers later fought and regained the lead in the second quarter with another pass completion from McCahill to running back Caden Whitehead for three yards and a score, Sullivan making it 14-7 with the extra point.

Tigers dominated the second half

The third quarter followed with a dominant performance from the Tigers.

DePauw continued adding points to the scoreboard with a five-yard score from running back Gus Baumgartner, kicker Matthew Berry making it 21-7 with the extra point.

Later, in the fourth quarter, DePauw added its fourth score after Gabe Quigly hit Ballentine for a 28-yard touchdown, Sullivan adding the extra point to make it 28-7.

What’s Next?

The Tigers will look to continue their unbeaten run when they play away from home against Oberlin College (1-3) on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The Battling Bishops will look to bounce back after this loss when they host the Little Giants of Wabash College (2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 30.
