Greencastle wrestlers pick up home win over West Vigo
A still-developing Greencastle wrestling team got the chance to entertain a home crowd Wednesday evening as the Tiger Cubs hosted West Vigo, winning an eight-bout dual 57-16 over the Vikings.
“We’re young and getting better every day,” Greencastle head coach Kyle Shaffer said. “We’ve got a lot of freshmen and sophomores out there.”
The opening match of the dual took place at 175 pounds where Sam White was able to fend off being pinned at the end of both the first and second periods and even got a takedown and nearfall points in the third period but ultimately dropped a 12-4 major decision to West Vigo’s Jordan Krause.
“Sam’s a first-year guy and made a few mistakes but didn’t give up, didn’t quit and finished strong, so that was awesome to see,” Shaffer said of the senior.
After a scoreless first period Greencastle’s Cameron Mager started the second period with an escape, takedown and back points but was reversed and fell to Chase Hedden.
The Tiger Cubs would win the next four matches as Parker Welker won by fall in the first period over Christian Beatie at 215 pounds, as would Kody Roberts at 285 pounds over Aaron Fortune.
Anthony Peters added a 8-4 decision at 106 pounds over Aiden Boyles while Dylan Archer scored a pin in the second period over Hayden Heck at 120 pounds.
Easton Roberts picked up West Vigo’s third win of the night with a second period fall over Aurora Roberts at 132 pounds before Greencastle senior Cooper Robinson bumped up a weight and picked up a second period fall over Blake Elkins to cap the evening’s action.
Forfeits went to Tiger Cubs Tyler Sandusky at 157 pounds, CJ Proctor at 165 pounds, Elijah Frank at 113 pounds, Cyrus Gurnon at 126 pounds and Cayden Blodgett at 138 pounds while there was a double forfeit at 144 pounds with Robinson moving up in class.
“We see (West Vigo) three times this year, so it’s good to start building up some momentum in WIC matches,” Shaffer said about the win. “We went to Crawfordsville earlier and they put it to us.
“I was pleased with the way we responded as we wrestled a lot better this evening. Technique-wise, we got a lot better and even though it was a short time, our progress is going in the right direction.”
