Beyond Homeless to open warming shelter for upcoming frigid temps

Wednesday, January 10, 2024

With temperatures forecast to drop near zero this weekend, Beyond Homeless is opening a warming center in the Beyond Homeless Day Shelter, located at 309 E. Franklin St., Greencastle.

The warming center will be open from 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13 through 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The day shelter is in front of the regular Beyond Homeless shelter, where the Putnam County Housing Authority used to be located.

The warming center is open to everyone in need of a warm place to be, even individuals and families who may experience power outages during the cold weather.

Volunteers are needed to help with the warming center. Assistance is needed with oversight of operations, center check-in, organization of belongings, ensuring food and drinks are available and general cleaning. Shifts of two or four hours are available beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to volunteers, donations of water, drinks, snacks and meals are needed.

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating items may contact the Beyond Homeless team at 765-301-9263, Option 2, for further information.
