County Jail

Several people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 11:24 a.m. Linda A. Nye, 50, Indianapolis, was taken into custody on an out-of-county warrant.

Saturday

• At 11 p.m. Fernando M. Rivera, 45, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for driving while intoxicated.

• At 1:05 a.m. Dakota J.J. Holland, 30, Indianapolis, was booked in on a local warrant.

• At 12:05 a.m. Austin J. Nickol, 36, Brownsburg, was lodged at the jail on a local warrant.

Friday

• At 12:20 p.m. Jason D. Grimes, 39, Lebanon, was booked in on a local warrant.

Thursday

• At 9:57 p.m. Christopher E. Bassett, 46, Plainfield, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

• At 4:34 p.m. Heather A. Meagher, 40, Cloverdale, was booked in possession of a device or substance used to interfere with a drug screen.

• At 3:29 p.m. Madeline E. Sexton, 24, Roachdale, was lodged at the jail on an out-of county warrant.

• At 3:19 p.m. Larry J. Sexton II, 29, Waveland, was taken into custody on a local warrant.

• At 2:03 p.m. Clifton D. Tuell, 59, Greencastle, was housed at the jail on a local warrant.

City Police

Two recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers:

• At 1:28 p.m. Saturday, Michael Van Every, 43, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Alec Pettit.

Taken into custody at GPD headquarters, Van Every was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of criminal trespass and criminal mischief.

• At 2:05 a.m. Saturday, Patricia Colantonio, 32, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Damon Ludwig.

Taken into custody at Castlebury Apartments, Colantonio was lodged in the Putnam County Jail. She was booked in on charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement and a Hendricks County warrant for probation violation on an original charge of unlawful possession of a syringe.

One recent summons was issued by Greencastle City Police officers:

• At 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Zachary Benassi, 30, Greencastle, was given a summons by Officer Pettit.

Stopped at Walnut and Jackson streets, Benassi was issued a summons into court for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

One recent citation was issued by Greencastle City Police officers:

• At 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Donna Frazier 51, Greencastle, was ticketed by Officer Luke Brown.

Stopped at Bloomington Street and Keightly Road, Frazier was cited for having an expired license plate (expired April 28, 2022).

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated eight recent crashes.

• At 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, Marguerite J. Collins, 48, Indianapolis, was westbound on U.S. 40 at County Road 800 West in a 2015 Chevrolet Volt when she hit a deer.

Sgt. Brian Helmer estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 11:10 p.m. on Saturday Misty Davis, 43, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40, approaching County Road 300 East in a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt when she hit a deer.

Deputy Derek Tomaw estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 1:14 a.m. on Saturday, Ila J. Jones, 56, Brazil, was westbound on County Road 100 South at the intersection of County Road 600 West in a 1997 GMC Jimmy when she hit a deer.

Sgt. Helmer estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 11:14 p.m. on Friday, Nicholas Bishop, 27, Coatesville, was eastbound on County Road 100 North at the intersection of County Road 750 East in a 1994 Dodge Ram when he lost control in the snow and slush on the roadway.

Deputy Todd Hopkins reported that the vehicle slid off the roadway and into the ditch. Bishop told Hopkins he had not hit the fence, but the truck was up against a post that was visibly leaning.

Bishop also told Hopkins he had a friend come get him and was going to tow the truck out later.

Hopkins charged Bishop with misdemeanor leaving the scene of an accident.

The deputy estimated damage at less than $1,000.

• At 11:55 a.m. on Friday, David Bates, 66, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2010 Ford Fusion.

Bates was about a half mile west of the Big Walnut bridge when he lost control on the slush-covered road. Det. Matthew Biggs noted that marks indicated the vehicle had spun 180 degrees while leaving the road, traveling backward on the north side of the road until the rear end struck a ditch and tree line. The vehicle sustained damage to both the front and rear of the vehicle.

The car was towed. Biggs estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Taylor R. Boller, 21, Roachdale, was eastbound on County Road 1400 North in a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu when she hit a deer.

Reserve Deputy Commander Ken Rozelle estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:57 p.m. on Wednesday, Dawnell Stewart, 59, Bainbridge, was turning onto U.S. 36 from U.S. 231 in a 2008 Mercury Mariner. Angela Layton, 61, Greencastle, was westbound on 36 in a 2018 Jeep Wrangler.

Stewart told Deputy Josh Clark she made a wide turn and then crashed into Layton’s vehicle. Layton said she saw Stewart in her lane, flashed her lights at the other vehicle and then was struck.

Both vehicles were towed, but neither driver was injured. Clark estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 2:39 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, Patricia J. Coffman, 70, Coatesville, was traveling on Heritage Drive on a downhill curve in a 2015 Chevrolet Impala.

Coffman failed to negotiate the curve on the slick, icy roadway and ran down an embankment and into trees, causing minor damage to the front bumper.

The car was towed due to a flat tire caused by leaving the roadway. Reserve Deputy Commander Rozelle estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to 18 incidents between Sunday evening, Jan. 14 and last Sunday afternoon:

• At 6:11 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, GFD was requested by the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department for a machinery fire at POET. Firefighters arrived at 6:30 and assisted with extinguishing a fire that damaged a hammer mill. GFD went back into service at 7:28 p.m.

• At 6:35 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, GFD was dispatched to 91 Briarwood Ct. for a hot smell and an activated smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:41 and did not locate anything hot. It was determined the detector was faulty and the homeowner was advised to replace it. GFD went back into service at 7:18 p.m.

• At 7:27 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, GFD was dispatched to Pi Beta Phi at DePauw University for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 7:30 and did not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 7:40 p.m.

• At 10:19 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, GFD was dispatched to Mansfield House at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:23 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 10:34 p.m.

• At 10:51 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, GFD was dispatched to Delta Upsilon at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:53 and determined the alarm was due to cologne. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 11:04 p.m.

• At 11:37 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, GFD was dispatched to Casa Grande for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 11:44 and did not determine the cause of the alarm. They were unable to reset the alarm without a code, and an employee advised that a manager would be contacted. GFD went back into service at 12:12 p.m.

• At 3:22 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, GFD was dispatched to Pi Beta Phi at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 3:27 and determined the alarm was due to a water leak. They assisted with shutting the water off. GFD went back into service at 3:43 p.m.

• At 10:28 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17, GFD was dispatched to 909 Zinc Mill Terrace Dr. for a sprinkler activation. Firefighters arrived at 10:31 and found a sprinkler system leaking in an apartment. The water was shut off, while maintenance arrived and advised that repairs would be made. GFD went back into service at 10:59 p.m.

• At 2:47 a.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to Sigma Alpha Epsilon at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:59 and determined the alarm was due to a busted pipe that was connected to a radiator-type heater. The water was shut off to the heater and the alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 3:16 a.m.

• At 7:21 a.m. on Thursday, GFD responded for a motor vehicle incident without injuries at 1827 W. CR 125 South. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:28 and found a motorist who ran out of gas and pulled off to the side of the roadway. Police arrived and GFD went back into service at 7:52 a.m.

• At 12:09 p.m. on Thursday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle incident without injuries at the intersection of Bloomington and Seminary streets. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 12:18 and removed debris from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 12:41 p.m.

• At 9:37 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Cricket Mobile for a gas leak. Firefighters arrived at 9:47 and did not detect any significant readings inside this part of the building. They then located a leaking propane tank in Mason Jewelers next door. The tank was removed and the space was ventilated. Once levels were back within normal limits, GFD went back into service at 10:08 a.m.

• At 4:19 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Kappa Alpha Theta at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 4:23 and determined the alarm was due to a malfunction with the alarm system. They could not reset the system, and maintenance advised that the alarm company would be contacted for repairs. GFD went back into service at 5:22 p.m.

• At 2:36 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched for a downed power line at 105 Shadowlawn Ave. Firefighters found the line near the roadway at 2:40 and requested that Duke Energy be contacted. GFD went back into service at 2:50 p.m.

• At 10:56 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Delta Upsilon at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:59 and determined the alarm was due to smoking. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 11:02 p.m.

• At 10:13 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 205 Northwood Blvd. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:18 and determined the alarm was due to a dirty detector head. The detector head was cleaned, and GFD went back into service at 10:30 a.m.

• At 1:02 p.m. on Sunday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle incident at the intersection of Warren Drive and State Road 240. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 1:10 and cleaned up debris and fluid. GFD went back into service at 1:45 p.m.

• At 3:49 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to the apartments at 330 Greenwood Ave. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 3:54 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 4:03 p.m.

Additionally, GFD responded for 16 medical assists and had three disregards during this timeframe.
