County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Friday

• At 10:29 p.m. Rachel N. Coley, 30, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on an out-of-county warrant.

• At 2:02 p.m. David W. Pruiett, 42, Cloverdale, was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

• At 12:29 p.m. Johnny R. Corder, 31, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail for possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia.

Thursday

• At 3:51 p.m. Charity J. Weaver, 45, Cloverdale, was booked in on a local warrant.

• At 10:26 a.m. Travis R. Sherber, 41, New Richmond, was lodged at the jail for use of a cellular telephone or device while incarcerated.

City Police

Three recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers:

• At 12:18 a.m. Sunday, Markus Roberts, 21, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Justin Herd on alcohol-related charges.

Stopped and Vine and Walnut streets, Roberts was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated-endangerment.

Under portable breathalyzer testing, Roberts’ blood-alcohol concentration registered .154 percent. In Indiana, .08 percent and higher is considered intoxicated under law.

• At 2:32 a.m. Friday, Hayden Parrish, 29, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Billy DeWitt on alcohol-related charges.

Stopped at Round Barn Road and Autumn Glen Drive, Parrish was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated with a prior conviction.

Under portable breathalyzer testing, Parrish’s blood-alcohol concentration registered .084 percent.

• At 9:03 p.m. Jan. 22, Saleena Cooper, 26, Cloverdale, was arrested by Officer Herd on the Walmart Supercenter parking lot.

Cooper, who was lodged in the Putnam County Jail for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated was spotted acting erratically by an off-duty officer from another agency. Under portable breathalyzer testing, her blood-alcohol concentration registered .155 percent.

One recent summons was issued by city officers:

• At 8:41 p.m. Friday, Jeffrey Huff, 50, Greencastle, was given a summons by Officer Herd.

Stopped on Bloomington Street, Huff was cited for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

One recent traffic accident was investigated by GPD officers:

• At 1:02 p.m. Jan. 21, a two-vehicle accident was reported at State Road 240 and Warren Drive.

Capt. Brad Hiatt reported that Joshua Harper, 37, Rockville, was northbound on Warren Drive, driving a 2022 Toyota Rav 4. After seeing no cross traffic while stopped at the stopsign, he proceeded into the intersection and collided with a westbound 2003 Pontiac Bonneville driven by Bryan Smith, 37, Greencastle.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $5,000-$10,000. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent crashes.

• At 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Linda M. Folck, 73, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 400 East, having just turned off of County Road 500 North in a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse.

Folck told Deputy Levi Martin that as she drover, her cell phone slid off the center console and she attempted to catch it, briefly taking her eyes off the road.

As she did so, her driver’s side wheels left the road and entered a deep ditch. This pulled the vehicle further into the ditch, where it came to rest on its driver’s side.

Folck was transported from the scene for complaint of pain and cuts to her right hand.

The vehicle was towed. Martin estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:33 p.m. on Thursday, Sophia A. Strohl, 76, Brazil, was westbound on U.S. 36 just west of U.S. 231 in a 2016 Hyundai Sonata.

Strohl told Deputy Todd Hopkins that her phone rang for the third time in a few minutes, so she attempted to answer it. When she looked down to do so, she hit a guardrail on the north side of the road, causing heavy damage to the front passenger side of the vehicle.

The car was towed. Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 6:33 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Linda L. Roessler, 73, Rockville, was westbound on U.S. 36 just west of County Road 600 West in a 2005 Ford Taurus when she hit a deer.

Gale A. Williams, 69, Rockville, was westbound in a 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan when she hit the same deer, that was lying in the roadway.

Likewise, Ashalyn A. Steele, 28, Terre Haute, hit the same deer with a 2011 Chrysler 200.

Roessler’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 12:52 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Luis F. Salas Alicea, 41, Ocala, Fla, was southbound on County Road 25 West in a 2012 Toyota Camry.

Salas Alicea told Deputy Soilleux the vehicle got sideways on him, left the road and ran into the ditch, where it got stuck in the snow. The vehicle suffered heavy front-end damage and was towed.

Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to seven incidents between Thursday and Sunday morning:

• At 8:04 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to 1924 Wildwood Dr. for an odor of smoke in the garage. Firefighters arrived at 8:12 and found light smoke inside. It was determined that the cord to a space heater had melted, causing the odor and smoke. No fire was found, and GFD went back into service at 8:35 p.m.

• At 8:58 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to 1595 S. CR 250 East for a large tree in the roadway. Firefighters found it at 9:07 p.m. and removed it. GFD went back into service at 9:26 p.m.

• At 7:51 p.m. on Friday, GFD was requested by the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department for an elevator rescue at Holiday Inn Express in Cloverdale. Firefighters arrived at 8:04 p.m. and assisted with removing the person from the elevator. GFD went back into service at 8:30 p.m.

• At 1:11 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Jordan Hall at DePauw University for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 1:16 and determined the alarm was due to hair care products. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 1:19 p.m.

• At 2:04 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:08 and did not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 2:18 p.m.

• At 4:32 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched for a tree in the intersection of U.S. 231 and County Road 75 North. Firefighters found the tree at 4:41 and removed it. GFD went back into service at 4:47 a.m.

• At 9:25 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was requested by Cloverdale Township Fire to cover its station during an incident at POET. GFD arrived at 9:40, while Cloverdale firefighters contained fires in two regenerative thermal oxidizers. After the scene was cleared, GFD went back into service at 10:40 a.m.

Additionally, GFD responded for two medical assists and had one disregard during this timeframe.
