William Charles ‘Bill’ Poynter

William Charles “Bill” Poynter, 86, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Bill was born in Crawfordsville on Dec. 11, 1937, the son of Glenn Hollis Poynter and Mary Kathryn (Taylor) Poynter. He was a 1956 graduate of Bainbridge High School.

Mr. Poynter proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1961.

He was a former member of the Greencastle Jaycees. He was co-founder of the Putnam County 4-H Rabbit Club, and served as a judge and registrar for the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

Bill worked for H. Maurice Broadstreet Excavating for many years, and was a heavy equipment operator until his retirement.

Bill enjoyed gardening and specialized in tomatoes. He was an avid mushroom hunter and outdoorsman, and took great pride in caring for his property.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Doretta; two daughters, Sherry Hedge (Bob) of Greencastle and Sandy Dean (Steve) of Greenwood; a son, Charles Poynter (Tamara) of Fishers; a sister, Carolyn Fowler (Claude) of Bainbridge; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Bittles & Hurt Funeral Home with Pastor Bryan Langdoc officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday.
