Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated seven recent crashes.

• At 1:20 a.m. on Monday, Reilly Tucker, 25, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze when a deer entered the roadway.

Tucker told Deputy Derek Tomaw she swerved to miss the animal but overcorrected and left the north side of the road, entering the ditch. Tucker said she was going approximately 60 mph, so she drove in the ditch for about 50 yards before attempting to stop. She finally came to a stop once she came back out of the ditch and entered the gravel driveway of Big Walnut Nature Preserve.

The car was towed. Tomaw estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:10 a.m. on Saturday, Marcus Pickett, 31, Flagstaff, Ariz., was pulling into the parking lot of the Cloverdale Truck Stop, 1032 N. Main St., Cloverdale, in a 2023 International LT62F semi pulling a trailer. Sunil Kumar, 28, Sacramento, Calif., was parked in the lot in a 2024 Kenworth T680, also pulling a trailer.

Pickett told Deputy Tomaw he was pulling down a slight hill when the vehicle began to slide on the icy pavement. He said he attempted to turn left to miss Kumar’s tractor-trailer, but slid into the passenger side, causing damage to the driver’s-side door and steps.

A wrecker service was able to separate the two vehicles with no further damage done.

Tomaw estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8:27 p.m. on Friday, Tammy Young, 62, Charleston, Ill., was westbound on County Road 100 South in a 2008 Pontiac G6 when a coyote ran in front of her.

Young told Deputy Todd Hopkins she attempted to stop, but lost control on the snow and ice of the road, crossing the oncoming lane and sliding into the ditch.

The car was towed. Hopkins estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 5:40 p.m. on Friday Brady Woods, 28, Danville, was northbound on U.S. 231 at Plessinger Hill in a 2022 Ford F-550. Omar Hernandez, 19, Carmel, was also northbound in a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage.

Woods told Deputy Hopkins he braked and slowed down, as did the car in front of him. At that point, Hernandez’s vehicle made rear-end contact with the truck Woods was driving.

Hopkins estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 12:29 p.m. on Friday, Paul D. Glotzbach, 49, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2016 Ford Fusion when it hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 12:02 a.m. on Friday, Riley Summerlot, 26, Roachdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 when a deer ran into the road and struck his 2021 Dodge Challenger.

Deputy Josh Clark estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Corbin Welchel, 15, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 1200 South in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Welchel told Deputy Clark he hit a rock or pothole, which caused him to leave the road and hit a telephone pole. Clark checked the area for potholes or objects in the road and could not find any.

Welchel then said he had a problem with power steering and couldn’t turn that well.

Although the minor declined medical attention, his parents said they were taking him to be checked out for injuries.

The vehicle was towed. Clark estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.
