A toddler died Wednesday while in the care of a babysitter on Greencastle’s east side, but no foul play is suspected.

At 2:30 p.m., emergency personnel were called to an Avenue D residence regarding an 18-month-old boy who was not breathing or responding.

Responders arrived and immediately provided medical attention to the child. Putnam County EMS transported him to Putnam County Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police remained on the scene into the evening conducting an investigation, though Greencastle Police Department Asst. Chief Ed Wilson classified this as police being thorough, given the nature of the incident.

“We don’t suspect foul play of any kind,” Wilson said. “We just think it was a horrible, horrible circumstance.”

Responding agencies besides PC EMS and GPD included Greencastle Fire Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and Putnam County Coroner’s Office.

“Our hearts go out to all the emergency personnel who put out a valiant effort to aid the child,” Wilson said, “and our deepest sympathies go to the families involved.”

Given the circumstances, the Banner Graphic will not be naming any of the parties involved and will report no further on the incident unless the nature of the investigation changes.
