Thomas ‘Tommy’ W. Battin

Thomas “Tommy” W. Battin, 78, of Reelsville, passed away on March 8, 2024 following a lengthy illness.

Tommy was born on Jan. 24, 1946 in Indianapolis, the son of Ervin and Thelma (Merrill) Battin.

He graduated from Reelsville High School with the class of 1965.

He worked for Lone Star (now Buzzi Unicem) for more than 40 years before retiring. Tommy held many positions within the plant. For the last 20 years of his career, Tommy worked as a welder. Tommy was the go-to resource for many challenging projects within the plant. He was a problem solver who could create the tools necessary to make life easier for those he worked with.

When he wasn’t working, Tommy enjoyed spending time outdoors. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, target shooting, bird watching and swimming. He also was a talented artist. He was an accomplished wood carver, painter and knife maker. Most of all, Tommy loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Thelma Battin; son Shawn Battin; grandchildren Scott Parker and Tim Parker; siblings Patty May and Raymond Battin; and an infant sister, Maxine Battin.

Tommy is survived by his wife, Julia Jean (Chew) Battin, whom he married on Aug. 21, 1965. He is also survived by his daughter, Kristi Short (Tom); son Brent Battin (Julie); daughter-in-law Angie Battin; grandchildren Bailee Parker, Dylan Battin (Hannah), Blake Battin, Tanner Parker (Racheal), Tristan Short, Lexi Short (fiance Cameron), Madi Short, Justin Renner, Jordan Battin, Ryan Battin (Stephanie Fougerousse), Ayden Battin and Christina Parker; great-grandchildren Grayson Battin, Anzlee Parker, Keilynn Parker, Jayden Battin and Stella Battin; siblings Jean Hull (Tom), Max Battin (Laurel), Loretta Wilkins and Louise Evans (Bill); as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave., Brazil, on March 23 from 1-3 p.m. Services will follow at the funeral home at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 6500 Technology Center Dr., Ste. 100, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
