David Masten, 58, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2024, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

He was born Nov. 9, 1965 in Valparaiso, spent much of his youth in Cloverdale and graduated from Greencastle High School in 1984.

For many years, David was a newspaper carrier in Cloverdale and Greencastle, volunteered at the Putnam County Hospital, was involved at Cummins Behavioral Health and was affectionately known around Greencastle as “The Can Man.” He was also a beloved member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church.

David is survived by his mother, Alice (Day) Applegate of Fort Myers, Fla., and his sister- and brother-in-law, Kathryn (Masten) and Randy Cain of Vienna, Md.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Masten, and brother Ken Masten.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. at Gobin Church in Greencastle, followed by graveside committal at Forest Hill Cemetery and, in the future, a memorial spaceflight. A longtime Trekkie, David sought deeper understanding of extraterrestrial languages and time travel. He envisioned exiting this Earth via spaceship, and it looks like this will happen.

We hope all who knew David can join and share your remembrances while David was here on Earth. Live long and prosper among the stars, David!

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of David to Cummins Behavioral Health.
