Tigers take extra innings to defeat Engineers

TERRE HAUTE -- The DePauw University baseball team had to go extra innings to take down Rose-Hulman Wednesday night, being them 11-9 in 11 innings.

Jack Gavin started the hitting in the 11th by smacking a double, then was moved to third on a Taylor Hoffman single to left field.

Eric Reese delivered at the plate by hitting a single to left to score Gavin and put the Tigers on top for good. Hoffman scored on a Matt Kleine sacrifice fly to make it 11-9.

Kleine also hit a two-out solo homer in the fifth that started a four-run inning which tied the game at 7-all. Adam Ford's sixth-inning double scored Kleine and gave DePauw an 8-7 advantage. Chandler Kent's single in the seventh brought Gabe Focke home and tied the score at 8-8.

Rose-Hulman loaded the bases in the ninth before DePauw releiver Paul Rodenhouse retired Adam Knaack on a flyout to right. Rodenhouse ended the Engineers' 10th inning threat as well after Rose-Hulman loaded the bases with one out.

Rodenhouse improves to 3-3 on the season, while Joe Valerioti dropped to 1-2.

Hoffman collected four of DePauw's 22 hits in the game, while Kleine, Gavin, Jeremy Dickinson and Justin Weiner each added three. Reese and Drew Holy finished with two hits each. Kleine drove in four in the win.

DePauw will take the field again Friday when it plays in the best-of-three SCAConference Divisional Playoff series with Southwestern at 5 p.m. CDT.
