Under watchful eyes

Friday, August 20, 2010
A motorist passes by the new driver feedback sign on South Jackson Street in Greencastle, safely under the 20 mph speed limit. The LED sign, which runs entirely on the power from the attached solar panel, is equipped with a radar gun and tells motorists their speed. Although the post in the ground is a permanent fixture, several posts will be installed around town, on top of which the detachable sign and solar panel can be placed. More details about the new sign will be available in an upcoming edition of the Banner Graphic. Banner Graphic/JARED JERNAGAN

  • They need to have a speed limit sign there as well. What good will it do if you can't tell if you're actually speeding or not?

  • Wow! Our vehicles have these things called speedometers, they do the same thing and the city did not have to pay for them! People are generally aware of their speed and if they are speeding. Unless of course the speed is not posted properly.

  • You all know that we have to slow down for the precious college students. $30,000.00 per year tuition, yet they still don't have enough sense to stay out of traffic.

    Two proposed new courses:

    Crossing the Street 101

    Smoke Alarm-Free Microwave Popcorn 102

  • Many studies have been done on radar speed signs, and can be seen at www.lcpsi.com, 80%-85% of speeders do not know they are speeding, of the ones that do some believe these have cameras and will slow down as well, these have saved many many lives in the last 10 years they have beena around.

  • It doesn't do any good to post speed signs if no one pays any attention to them

  • Although these radars are a good idea to keep the residents and students of Greencastle safe, we could have used taxpayer money in better places.

Example: Rather than homeowners paying half the bill to fix city sidewalks in front of there homes, use the same money that paid for these radars going up around town.

I am sure they are not cheap and property taxes recently went up....Why you ask?.....Apparently to pay for expensive traffic radars.

I am alos pondering if these same studies were used to decide to put a stop sign on Veterans HWY? I guess computers make all the right decisions.....lol
