North boys get win at Tri-West
LIZTON -- With the Putnam County girls' swim meet being contested Thursday, North Putnam sent its boys' squad to Tri-West Wednesday night solo, along with Fountain Central.
While the Bruins and Mustangs competed in both girls and boys action, the Cougars came in and squeaked past the hosts 121-119, with Fountain Central finishing third.
Dane Gray led the charge for North Putnam, picking up wins in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Nick Kauffman won the 50 free while Jonah Creamean won the 200 free.
In addition, Gray, Kauffman, Trevor Troyer and Jacob Hendershot won the 200 free relay.
With the squad in the middle of a transition period, North Putnam head coach Tony Gray said that it was a solid win.
"I think it went pretty well," Gray said. "We're in the middle of no-man's land between the end of training and waiting to taper off, so the kids feel a little funky right now.
"We put them in events they are not accustomed to swimming. I think we responded pretty well. We were short one of our captains but the freshmen came through and swam very strong.
"Jonah Creamean had a good night and Darion Brown had a solid evening as well," Gray added. "Brandon Wunderlich, who couldn't swim six weeks ago, was tearing it up and I'm very proud of that.
"We put them in some off events tonight to keep their focus and attention for a little bit. They're ready for tapering and I'm ready for them to taper as well."
Gray now turns his attention to tonight's girls' county meet.
"I think it's going to be a fun night for the girls," Gray said. "We're up to our full complement of 10 girls now. I think we're going to have a personal best for every girl in every race we swim Thursday night.
"If we do that and have fun, it's going to be a successful night."
