COUNTY VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Clovers take second at Cadet Invitational
CLAYTON -- The Cloverdale volleyball team took second place at the Cadet Invitational on Saturday. The Clovers went undefeated in their pool play by defeating Clay City (25-15, 25-17), Covenant Christian (25-18, 25-23) and Cascade (20-25, 25-20, 15-8).
The Clovers lost to Cardinal Ritter in the championship in two games, 25-16, 25-18, to earn second place in the eight-team tourney. The Clovers improved to 15-11 on the season with the tournament.
"We had a great tournament run with 3 hard fought wins in our pool play," CHS coach Kathy Moore said. "I thought we played with enthusiasm and good communication. It was great to see the girls play so well and have fun.
"The championship game was another story though as Ritter is a very hard hitting team," Moore said. "Ritter had two terrific jump servers who ran up some points on us the first game and it took the air out of our sails."
Leading the Clovers in tournament play was Ashley Koosman with 23 points, 23 kills and 77 digs. Kristin McCammon was right behind with 22 points, 14 of which were aces.
Erica Lotz hadf 28 set assists, while Elizabeth Cheatham collected 10 blocks and five stuffs.
"I am proud of the girls performance and we are playing some very good teams this coming week," Moore said. "We see conference-leading Speedway on Monday, Southmont on Tuesday our senior night and a tough Linton team on Thursday."

GHS goes 1-2 at Cadet Invitational
CLAYTON -- The Greencastle volleyball team competed in the Cadet Invitational Saturday. The Tiger Cubs picked up a win against county rival North Putnam, but dropped contests to Ritter and Guerin Catholic.
In the first game, Greencastle lost to Ritter in two games, losing 26-24 and 25-15.
In the second game, the Tiger Cubs forced Guerin Catholic to a third game. After losing the first game 25-18, the Tiger Cubs won the second 25-21. But in the final game, Guerin Catholic edged out GHS, winning 15-12.
Greencastle gained a victory in the third game against the Cougars. GHS won the contest 25-14 and 25-16.
Kelsey Hennette played strong for the Tiger Cubs, recording 49 assists, 12 aces, four kills and 29 points, while Olivia Miller added 37 kills, 22 blocks, three stuff blocks and 10 points.
Brooke Lewis contributed 44 digs, eight kills, three aces and seven points, with Kayla Nobles collecting 20 digs, four kills and six points. Kristen Flint had 17 blocks, five kills, four stuffs and 12 points and Veronica Sawyer added nine digs, three aces, one assist and five points.
"This was a nice tourney with the opportunity to play teams that we don't see during the regular season," head coach Trish Lowe said. "We had some moments of brilliance, but not enough to place in the tourney. I was glad to get some tourney experience for our younger players before the sectionals."
Greencastle will travel to Riverton Parke at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and North Putnam will host South Vermillion at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

GHS defeats Owen Valley
The match-up between the Greencastle and Owen Valley turned into a slugfest Monday night as the squads went five games with GHS coming out on top. The Tiger Cubs won 25-21, 15-25, 26-24, 19-25 and 16-14.
"What a finish for our seniors at home. They left nothing to spare and put everything into the win. I am so proud of our team's determination," head coach Trish Lowe commented.
Kelsey Hennette recorded season-high 44 assists along with 31 digs and five kills. Brooke Lewis added 25 digs and four kills and Kristen Flint 16 kills, 15 blocks, seven stuff blocks and one ace.
Kayla Nobles contributed 13 digs and five kills, while Sarah Land added 12 blocks, two stuff blocks and three kills. Chelsea Samuels collected four digs, with Hannah Cochran adding one ace and one dig and Mallory Miller adding one.
The Greencastle junior varsity lost to the Patriots, losing 25-23, 25-19 and 14-15.

Clovers drop one to Sparkplugs
SPEEDWAY -- The Cloverdale volleyball team fell to the Sparkplugs of Speedway in three games, 25-17, 25-10 and 25-6. The loss moves the Clovers to 2-4 in the WCC and 15-12 on the season.
For the Clovers, Ashley Koosman had five kills, while Kristin McCammon and Elizabeth Cheatham had three each. Jennifer Wiley, Kristen Schroer and Alesha Evans had one each.
Erica Lotz recorded five set assists, Maria Skiles had four and Kaileigh Sparks two.
At the net, Elizabeth Cheatham had three blocks and one stuff and Kristin McCammon added two.
"We were just plain flat in this match, nothing went right and it was just a poor performance," CHS coach Kathy Moore said.
The Clovers will host Southmont at 6 p.m. today.

Cougars fall to Warriors
BAINBRIDGE -- On Monday, the North Putnam volleyball squad dropped its contest with visiting Danville in three games.
Taylor Alles lead the Cougars with six digs, six kills, two blocks, one assist, while Ashley Doyle added 10 digs and two kills. Logan Doyle recorded three digs, three kills, two aces, two blocks and one assist, with Kayla Green contributing seven digs, one kill and one assist block.
Carlye McGaughey collected 11 digs, eight kills and one ace and Kacy Wendling added 16 assist, four digs and one kill.
"We played better tonight. Perhaps we are starting to get back to full health. Hopefully, we can build on this play into the rest of this week and into sectionals," Cougar head coach Michelle Spencer said.
In junior varsity action, lost in two games 25-11 and 25-18.
The Cougars will next host South Vermillion at 6--00 p.m. Thursday.
