Students learn the importance of good health habits

South Putnam Middle School hosted a Health Fair for seventh grade students Tuesday afternoon. Sponsored with a P.I.E. Coalition grant of $1,500.

School nurse Carla Stierwalt puts together the event with the help of school counselor Becky Brothers.

Students participate in various health related events including experiencing the effects of drinking by wearing a special pair of goggles, participating in a mock accident with Putnam County Operation Life and finding out how much sugar really is in your drinks by the Putnam County Extension Office.

Seventh-grader Louie Knoy tries walking with goggles that make him act like he is above the legal limit for drinking alcohol. The P.I.E. Coalition booth was a popular display at the South Putnam Middle School Health Fair held Tuesday afternoon at the school.

Several other organizations provided information and demonstrations at the event.

"We look forward to doing this every year. We get a lot of help," said Stierwalt. "This was the first year we had the grant from the P.I.E. Coalition and it really helped us," she added.
