Injured student upgraded
Drew Christy, the South Putnam High School graduate injured in a car accident several months ago, has been upgraded to a minimally conscious state and is currently in a rehabilitation center, his family said.
In a recent conversation with Drew's uncle, Brian Christy, he discussed his nephew's condition.
"(Drew) has pneumonia for the second time," Brian said. "He gets it because he is inactive."
The Hook Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis put Drew through therapy that involves passive range of motion and occupational therapy.
Passive range of motion is designed to keep his muscles from atrophying while he is minimally conscious. Occupational therapy involves the therapist running Drew through such things as brushing his teeth so that those muscles retain their use.
Brian also confirmed Drew has been moved to Mill Pond Health Campus in Greencastle.
Drew has recently made some progress and is now responding to some commands from his mother.
"We are hopeful. He has gone beyond what they said he'd be able to do," Brian said. "What (the family) expects is for him to keep improving."
According to neurology.org, "Minimally Conscious State (MCS) is characterized by inconsistent but clearly discernible behavioral evidence of consciousness and can be distinguished from coma."
Meanwhile, a new benefit to help the Christy family has been coordinated.
The May 17 event will include live music by musicians including Drew's brother-in-law John Harkin, Upward Journey and the Alternate Saints with a special appearance by Tad Robinson.
They also intend to have a silent auction for Colts and Chicago Cubs tickets, a Kenny Ames cedar chest and many more collectible items.
This event will take place at Robe-Ann Park in Greencastle between noon and 4 p.m.
If there is inclement weather, the venue will be changed to the DePauw Track and Tennis Center. The New Providence Church Dixie Chopper Raffle will take place at 4 p.m.
All proceeds will go to the Drew Christy Medical Fund.
