Democrats open new headquarters
Coinciding with the election year, the Democrats in Putnam County finally have Party Headquarters in Greencastle.
On Wednesday the building on the south side of the square located at 10 W. Washington St. was officially opened by the Putnam County Democratic Party with special visits from all Democratic candidates from the county. Kip Tew, the state organizer for the Barack Obama campaign from Indianapolis, was also present to help open the building.
"For the first time since probably the 1964 election, we feel confident Indiana could go blue," said Putnam County Democratic Party Chairman Dave Bohmer. "We also have a great chance of making a difference on the state and local levels as well."
There are seven democratic candidates running on the ticket this November from Putnam County. Included are: Nancy Michael running for State Representative District 44, Terry Clifford running for County Commissioner District 3, Gene Clodfelter running for County Commissioner District 1, Bette Bertram and L. Dale Pierce running for County Council at-large, Amanda Mullenix running for Putnam County Treasurer and Kraig Kinney running for Putnam County Superior Court Judge.
The candidates gave short speeches introducing themselves to democratic supporters from both DePauw University and the Putnam County area. All candidates are optimistic about the Democrats opportunity this election from the local levels all the way up to the national level.
Bette Bertram even talked about how she is not a politician by trade but is "just tired of how things in the county operate." She teared up when she stated she would donate her salary to both the Humane Shelter of Putnam County and the A-Way Home Shelter.
Nancy Michael had the exact countdown (61 days as of Wednesday) until the election in November. She was introduced by Tew as, "the next State Representative from Putnam County."
Party Headquarters is open to the public. Anyone wishing to help with the grassroots campaign is encouraged to go sign-up. The phone lines will be up next week sometime making the headquarters officially open.
