Eagles downed by Sparkplugs

SPEEDWAY -- The South Putnam volleyball team battle with Speedway Tuesday night, falling in three games to the Sparkplugs. They lost 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18.

Eagles head coach Jill Newton thought her squad played well despite the loss, but noted they struggled in the second game with their serve receive and got behind 0-13.

"It's hard to come back from that big of a deficit," Newton said. "Megan Klotz came in at the end of game two and did a nice job of serving and getting us back into the game."

She also pointed out the quickness of Speedway and acknowledged that is something her team struggles with. Newton singled out the play of Taylor Goss. She said she did a good job of digging some hard hit balls for the team.

Klotz led the way for South with seven points and four aces, while Oceaia Boetjer contributed eight points, two aces, one kill and six digs. Kaleigh Miller adding four points, three aces and five assists and Emily Dabkowski recorded two points, three kills, one dig and four assists on the night.

Abbie Trauner chipped in two points, three kills and two digs, with Katelyn Sibbitt adding one point and two digs, Taylor Goss five digs and Rachel Egold adding one kill and one dig. Ashley Wombles had a nice game for the Eagles with two kills, three blocks and one dig.

The junior varsity defeated the Sparkplugs in two games.
