Eagles soar to victory over Eels
South Putnam's winning ways continued Tuesday against Clay City. The Eagles blanked the Eels 4-0 and moved their record to 11-0 on the season.
"That was a good win for us," SPHS head coach Chris Jones said. "Sarah did a great job on the mound. It's only the second day in a week that we've been outside on the field. Yesterday we went to Indian Creek and were able to get a win. I was proud of the way we came out."
South Putnam was able to get the runs, but the story on the night was the play of freshman pitcher Sarah Burnham. Burnham struck out the first seven batters she faced and fanned 13 total batters on the night.
"She was great. She really moved her pitches well and had a lot of confidence," Jones acknowledged.
South Putnam was able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Oceaia Boetjer singled to score Krystal Welch.
The Eagles added three more runs it the bottom of the third when Jenny Thompson got things going with a long double to centerfield. Jessica Thompson and Krystal Welch both reached on errors. Both Thompsons and Welch crossed the plate for the Eagles to account for the runs.
The Eagles received a scare in the sixth inning when Clay City loaded the bases with only one out. South Putnam was able to get a forced out at home, with Welch closing the inning out with a snag in centerfield.
"We buckled down, they had bases loaded on us in the sixth inning and we got out of it," Jones commented. "A couple times we gave them extra outs in an inning, but Sarah battled through it, our defense battle through it and that was good to see."
When a team is perfect on the season, good coaches know there's always room for improvement. For Jones, the biggest aspect of the game his team needs to concentrate on is its focus and he thought they went a long way to improve on that Tuesday.
"I was really proud of the effort they gave and their focus for all seven innings, which is good. We've been working on that and it's good to see them working on it and they're doing a good job," Jones said.
The Eagles will travel to Rockville tonight at 5 p.m.
