BCB wraps concert season Aug. 29
The Brazil Concert Band, under the direction of Matthew S. Huber, proudly presents "Grand Finale 2010" at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29.
The BCB had a great season with 13 Sunday concerts in Forest Park, a program at Gobin Church in Greencastle and performances at Graceland and the W.C. Handy Park in Memphis.
The Sudler Award winning BCB will showcase highlights from the summer of 2010, plus a special historic musical treat -- a genuine saxophone octet as performed by members of the John Philip Sousa Band in the 1920s.
Huber received a boxful of original Sousa photos, uniform insignia, programs, route sheets and manuscript octets that belonged to Sousa Band member Fred Monroe of Evansville, Indiana from Monroe's great niece Carolyn Miller.
Monroe, who played the E flat contra bass saxophone with Sousa, scored the octets for performances during the Sousa Band concerts.
The BCB Saxophone Octet will feature Diana Joslin, Marcia Meurer, Troy Cummings, B.J. Reisinger (alto saxes), John Penry, Gary VanMiddlesworth (tenor saxes), Jack Malone (baritone sax) and Robert Pell (bass sax) in a lively march, "Brook's Chicago Marine Band."
The BCB play list for the Grand Finale includes "Emperata Overture," Hollywood Milestones," "The Purple Carnival," "Songs of Old Kentucky," "Ride of the Valkyries," "All Shook Up," "The Blue and the Gray," "Duke Ellington in Concert," "Mancini Magic," "Memories of Stephen Foster," "Lassus Trombone," "America the Beautiful," "El Capitan Waltz and March" and the BCB's signature march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever."
Melanie Huber will have for sale the BCB compact discs "Jewell of the Wabash" and "The Pride of Brazil."
The BCB invites one and all to see its website brazilconcertband.org including its successful tour of Memphis and to their fall show at the Terre Haute Scottish Rite at 3 p.m. on Nov. 21.
