CLAYTON -- The weather might have been cool, but the Greencastle girls' golf team was red hot Saturday en route to their school-record 394 and the West Central Conference Championship.

Chelsea Samuels also earned the school-record for individuals with her round of 78. She along with teammate Katie Hedge was named to the All-Conference team after Hedge posted a score of 91. Diane Wokoun missed out on the honor by three strokes after scoring a 105. Kay Wood shot a 120 for GHS and McKenzie St. Marie shot a 144.

Following the round, head coach Brad Kingma was pleased with his top two finishers and his heart went on to his No. 3.

"It was really good to see Chelsea play like that," Kingma said. "She really hadn't had the year she wanted to have this year, so she's gone 40 in the last match and 78 now, so that's really good heading into sectional. Katie had a bad break on the first hole. No one was out there spotting the ball and no one knew whether it went into the hazard or not, so she had to take a lost ball and that cost her a stroke and kind of got into her head. But she bounced back on the back nine and 44 is a good score for her.

"It's disappointing Diane didn't make All-Conference, but she had two bad holes and it just got to her," he added.

South Putnam finished third with a score of 412 and had three golfers named to the All-Conference squad.

Cierra Perry led the way for South Putnam with a 99. Caitlyn Boyce carded a 101 and Robbie Urton shot a 102 to be named to the All-Conference team.

Kelsey Searles carded a 110 and Madison Cash shot a 114.

South Putnam's head coach Debbie Steffy thought her team ended the day exactly where it should have. She noted the team has been improving all season and liked what she saw at Deer Creek Saturday.

"To be honest with you, we didn't talk about it as a team, but I was talking to one of our parents and said that's where I thought we would finish was about third," she said. "I thought we could, so I'm really pleased with the girls the way they played. We had some people play as well as we thought they could and we had some that hadn't played here before, so that was a nice thing.

"As the season has progressed we've gotten a little better. Our hope was to be around 390, so we missed that, but to have three players get All-Conference -- that's really nice. You can't be disappointed with that," Steffy commented.

North Putnam placed fifth overall with a 452. No. 1 golfer Valerie Scott narrowly missed being named All-Conference.

Scott shot a 105, missing being named by three strokes. Megan Schutter shot a 112, with Josie Parent carding a 117 and Ellen Wilborn a 118. Courtney Smith finished her day with a 136.

Cloverdale sophomore Sydney Shrum made the All-Conference team after firing a 96 to lead the Clovers on Saturday. As a team, the Clovers were sixth with a 514.

Victoria Boyette was yet another golfer missing the All-Conference cut by three strokes with a 105. Cedar Woodworth shot a 147, with McKayla Moore coming in with a 166.

Cloverdale head coach Ken Williams was too pleased with his team's performance on Saturday and believes his team must get stronger on the mental aspect of the game.

Greencastle will travel to Terre Haute South today at 5 p.m., while Cloverdale will host West Vigo Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. North Putnam will also be in action Tuesday at Western Boone at 4:30 p.m., with South Putnam's next action being the Putnam County match Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
