Final whistle blows at Monon

Beverly and Jerry Monnett could not be reached after several attempts. That is no surprise! IRS should go after their home and cars. another story about Trying to keep up with the Jones.

Very sad to see it go. Its not really a big surprise in this economy.

I can not believe that people can sit here and slam the monnetts. They may not have been perfect but neither are you. Do you have any idea the lives that are effected by this. Do you it may just be another resteraunt. It was their life. How about Diane who had been a waitress there for years, what is she going to do now. What about all the people that would meet there for breakfast and or coffee every morning, where will the go. The Monon is a piece of Greencastle history, how the effect on the town itself. You really should think about some things before you start running your mouth about people and if I were them, I would answer the phone either. The must be devasted!!!!!!!!!!!1

They weren't too debarred to strip the building of items of value so the IRS couldn't get the train items. Quit blaming the economy. I'll bet the final nail in the Monon coffin was the no smoking ban. The Monon customer cars can been seen down the street, out of the city limits, at the Fairway. Can't feel real bad for the Monnetts, I remember the Poor Farm.

Oh, sad news. I know this was a popular spot with lots of friends and DePauw students, too!

The Monnetts have been riding a thin rail for years.

For whatever reason for it's closing,the monon will be missed.

the food wasn't the best, the coffee sucked, and the service wasn't always polite, but the kids and I will sure miss the place.

I feel for all the employees, and people whom went there. this is an IRS issue, Back taxes, who do you want to be blames? Monnetts Did NOT pay all their taxes. They get what they the got coming!

The Monon is history ! the monnetts didn't make it that way, it was a family place/ great food in the 60's.

the waitress will be missed, they were always kind to me.

I haven't been to the Monon in almost 25 years, but I will never forget eating breakfast there during my teen years, Saturday mornings with my father. The only time that he and I were ever able to really talk, and I have nothing but great memories of the place. To me, the Monon will always be the greasy spoon where I could actually have a dad for an hour or two a week. It will always be there in my heart.

Another business closed, people unemployed, bummer.

If people recall the Monnetts were in trouble when they worked at the Putnam County Home. Things were missing.

My friend and I have met for breakfast at the Monon for several years now. The waitress would always say, "Are you waiting for your friend?" to whichever of us had arrived first. Took my kids there, told as many DePauw students about it as I could. A town treasure. I have no idea what the particulars are about how this came down, but it's a sad day when such a local gem goes away.

To the ones who will miss the place, I hope someone comes in and takes over. For the ones who don't care then why worry or say anything about it? For me, I ate there a couple times and it seemed like a good place to eat with a real homey atmosphere. I'm hoping the ones who lost their jobs can find new ones. That's my biggest concern. Oh and for the guy who was trashing other's grammar. Not everyone has auto correct on their computer or phones. Don't be a jerk and criticize because mainly it's just tacky behavior.

3 restaurants closed (Monon, Old Topper Steakhouse and the Old Hathaways), humane society about to close, Away Home shelter closing and Putnam County has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state. A sad time for our county

What about all the people that meet there every morning?? What are they going to do??

Well... unless they are complete non-thinking, non-functioning people, they will probably meet someplace else every morning. I'm pretty sure other places to get coffee are open to the public. I know McDonalds doesn't have an invite only list with a doorman keeping you out.

I wanted to note that this is an Indiana Department of Revenue closure for failure to forward collected sales tax to the State of Indiana (Not an issue with the Federal IRS).

Essentially all patrons have been donating an additional 7% to the pockets of the ownership under the ruse of "sales tax".

I have many great memories of eating at the Monon. It is unfortunate that the ownership didn't take steps to rectify this situation. I guess they assumed it would "never happen to them" or perhaps they simply could not afford to make payment arrangements with the state.

This is a sad public example of the state of our economy and the never ending slow death of small business.

My Choice..Treasures on the Square, Breakfast opens at 7:00 am. Not all day but they do have an awsome deluxe omlet and biscuits and gravy and less than $3.00.

Sorry to see the Monon go.

On the. upside- Chief's is looking for a couple of new servers! Go put your application in there!

Now maybe we cab get another good place to eat! I love Bdubs but we need one more good one

I sure will miss that place. So sad to see it go.

Our company has done work there. They never paid us once for our services. I am personally not surprised. Let's face it, the government has more reach than a local service company. Screw 'em!

what is the deal that people think can get away with some thing like this. what about the employees. how many times do they get away with something like this. remember the county home.

Not from Greencastle but I have eaten there a time or two. Liked the atmosphere, have some good memories. Do not know the owners. It would be nice if someone else could take it over though.

My family and I just wish them good luck with what they decide to do as for all the people talking about them are you that bored????????? I mean really! It is sad to see not many Christians on here with heart felt comments. Havent we all made mistakes? I mean come on they are the ones dealing with it now so just pray for them not badger them! Forget about the County Home people PLEASE good grief its over already! Please put more of your thoughts and energy on the Away Home Shelter and Humane society, as for Bev and Jerry, just pray...........it will get better.

So many negative comments... But then that's the Greencastle we've come to know. Since we moved here 10 years ago, the Monon has been our favorite place to go because of the food, the prices and because we were always welcomed there by the Monnetts. We wish them nothing but good things and we will miss them and the Monon.

Hate to hear of the Monon closing. Being one of the misplaced Hoosiers that relocated with IBM. We always made a point of stopping whenever visiting our G'castle friends. The Monon was a local treasure for many years, just like the buzz bomb. It will be missed.. Glad I have a Monon t-shirt.

My daughter worked there during the summer break from college, a few years ago, it took my husband to go down there and demand her paycheck before she went back to school. Bev kept hiding from us and would not pay, but she DID !!!
