The latest Putnam County Farm Bureau Legislative Update session evolved as a solo act. Rodric Bray (R-Martinsville), the first-term state senator for District 37, was the lone ranger for the second of three 2013 update programs conducted Saturday morning before a rather slim crowd of fewer than 20 in the Farm Bureau Board Room...

The South Putnam girls' seventh grade basketball team got a big win recently, knocking off Cloverdale 30-21. The Eagles had several tough games, against Clay City, North Clay, Rockville and Tri-West, before pulling out the county victory. SPMS scorers included Ally Nichols, who led the team with 12 points, Alex Fanning and Maddie McHugh (6 each), Savannah McIntosh (2) and Jessi Halcomb, who finished a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line...

CLOVERDALE -- Senior Night in basketball is a celebration of one class' accomplishments and work over the previous four years. So when the Cloverdale boys' basketball team played its final home game of the season last Friday, the crowd cheered at halftime as athletes from all sports were recognized...

Greencastle junior Nash Firebaugh is not the favorite to win a swimming state championship this weekend. He does not have the fastest 100-yard butterfly time in the state this year, and his 50-yard freestyle time is the second-slowest to qualify for the meet...

With an obvious chill in the air at their Tuesday evening meeting, the Putnam County Commissioners approved the purchase of a new Putnam County Courthouse boiler. Maintenance staff moved quickly, with the unit onsite by Wednesday afternoon. Three county employees and three jail trustees wrestled the 800-pound unit to the courthouse basement, where maintenance men Tom Gilson and Ryan Johnson will spend the next few days installing it...

The local Independence Day celebration committee, Celebrate 4, is organizing the 2013 Celebrate 4 Committee. The first public interest meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the Inn at DePauw. Celebrate 4 is looking for interested groups from Greencastle and the surrounding Putnam County communities to create another patriotic team of citizens, neighbors, students, moms and dads, friends, non-for-profits, small businesses and large businesses and service groups...

Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently. At 1:35 p.m. on Tuesday, Karen Sue Cutter, 61, Trail Creek, Ind., was arrested for probation violation. At 5:30 p.m. Jose Arriaga-Valdes, 41, Indianapolis, was lodged at the jail for nonsupport of a dependent...

Edward Earvin Lawson, 47, of Crawfordsville, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013. He was born in Greencastle on Nov. 3, 1965 to James Earvin and Geraldine Francis Webb Lawson. He graduated from North Putnam High School in 1984 and served in the U.S. Air Force as a senior airman from 1985-89...

The Greencastle Thunder sixth-grade girls' basketball team swept all four recent tournament games, winning the Bronze division in the Indy Girls' Hoops League. The IGHL held tournament games on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Beech Grove and Sunday, Feb. 17 at Plainfield. The team, having played together the past two years, consists of Aubrey Barker, Claire Gillen, Seelye Stoffregen, Sydney Lewis, Jalyn Duff, Gretchen Weliever and Bailey Shuee.
