Seems like one million and countingPosted Monday, February 4, 2008, at 9:58 PM
My little girl went trick-or-treating this past year as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz because she thought the girl on the magnates looked a little like her Mommy. Not until just recently did she discover the movie itself and it has become a non-stop Oz extravaganza around my house ever since.
I wake up in the morning in Munchkinland, spend the day along the Yellow Brick road and sometimes I'm even lucky enough to have lunch in the Emerald City. Ah, what a life. At one point today, my little girl turned in her chair and gave me a look and began repeating the same phrase over and over. I couldn't quite make it out at first, and then realized she was saying 'You ought to be ashamed'. This threw me for a total loop. My mind went racing, thinking of what my two-year old could be scolding me for -- then it dawned on me; I had just become the Cowardly Lion. Not a bad gig I guess, at least it's better than a flying monkey. The sad part is my Mom said I was scared to death of the Wicked Witch and my little one just looks at the TV unimpressed. I'm a delicate soul what can I say. I love my girl and I will watch the Wizard of Oz as many times as she would like but I'm secretly hoping for a break. No more ruby slipper or talking trees flinging fruit please. In my single days, my morning would consist of turning the TV to SportsCenter and the channel would never change. Today I split my time between the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, the Wonder Pets, Drake and Josh and now the Wizard of Oz. And the future seems destined to be as frilly as the past. I have another daughter set to make her North American debut any day now, so in two years I'm going to pull this blog out of the archive, check it out and see how history repeats itself. I have 4 boys and I have ran the gauntlet on small children programming.
First it was Barney, who after a while can start to become quite frightening!
Then it was Blues Clues...Steve is way funnier than Joe and I actually began to like these episodes although just like the Old Tom and Jerry versus the New Tom and Jerry...the new Blues Clues pales in comparison to the old versions.
Last I had to go through the pokemon stage! I do not know who the critics are that say different but Japanes animation is awful!! I truly believe that any of my children could do a better job with minimal training!
My heart goes out to you. I love my children and I would let them watch pretty much anything they wanted in the beggining but as I, and my children, have gotten older I am not so willing!
Stay strong my friend!
It does get better. My oldest daughter will be four in June. She too did the Oz thing at two.. Dressed up for Trick-or-treating in a costume that took me hours on my sowing machine. She tapped around the house in her ruby slippers until they were too tight. Now, it is on to bigger and better things. Now, it is Hannah Montana-tolerable. Much better than the Lollipop Guild. Trust me it could be worse-remember the Teletubbies?
I just spent a week with my 2 yr old cousin and her thing is Dora. Everything and anything Dora. I must admit...not too bad as far as cartoons go. It drove me crazy when my little brother was in the Pokemon/Yugioh stage!
Parenting, It's amazing isn't it? I remember Ninji Turtles, Barney, winnie the Pooh,Bananna's in Pajamma's, Blue's Clue's with Steve, Gargoyels, Poki Mon and Power Rangers. I have seen Beauty and the Beast , Lion King and Alladin probably 100 times , thats not a joke either. But you know what? they loved it! and I watched it with them ,even those annoying telly tubbies OH! MY! those were misery! But I would not change a thing. I too Loved the wizard Of Oz and had to wait every thanksgiving time to watch it cause they only showed it once a year on tv. Just like willy wonka. Some day you will think gosh where did time go? I miss it when my kids were babies and liked the goofy kids shows, I enjoy them now as well. Just remember they all will watch those goofy shows. Have fun.
