The sweetest words

Kids are amazing. My two daughters do things that amaze me on a daily basis and my oldest daughter did something a few weeks ago that completely melted my heart.
With working nights, I'm afforded the great opportunity to spend a large amount of time with my kids, and for anyone who knows me, we have a lot of the same interests. I love cartoons, I'm not above coloring for hours and there's nothing I like more than reading books at naptime. Recently, my oldest daughter and I were kicking it at home alone because she was sick. Lying on the couch watching Charlie Brown, she gave me a look and then put her tiny hand to her chest. Knowing that we had already had her to the hospital, I was a tiny bit concerned. Then she stuttered and stammered, trying to explain something to me, but all I could get from it was something about her heart. This really freaked me out. After a line of questioning, this is what my four year old said to me. "Daddy, you make my heart happy. You make my life happy." Wow. I was like butter in the hot summer sun. I didn't know what to say. She just kept looking at me with this little sideways grin and then leaned over and gave me a kiss on the forehead. She went on watching Snoopy and the gang like nothing big just happened. Of all the things I do, of all the things I'll ever achieve -- that is what makes life the most incredible journey any of us will ever take. I know times are crazy and there are things that need to be done, but take my advice and slow down, because what took my four-year old 10 seconds to say, will stay with me for a lifetime. Life's a journey -- enjoy the ride.
MGM logo anyone? It seems that the tough economic times are even being unkind to the beautiful people in the Hollyweird industry. The news came tonight that sources in the industry are expecting MGM to auction off their MGM-UA (United Artists) video library, consisting of 4,000 titles, and even the famous roaring lion logo is up for grabs. But is the trouble for MGM really something we should all be shocked by?...
A Christmas Carol teaser I will have a review of Jim Carrey's new flick A Christmas Carol in the Marquee this week. I can't tell you much, but I can tell you this -- you'll be surprised. Also, I will have a review for the Walt Disney Treasures: Zorro -- The Complete First and Second Season box sets...
What a "Great" Monday Finding myself off Monday, I wanted to do something special with my two daughters. Normally I'm covering a sporting event and it's hard for me to find the time during the week to do cool little things I enjoyed as a kid. Having seen that 'It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown' was scheduled to be on Tuesday and I would be at work, I decided to enjoy the event a night early...
Welcome wins at Heartland Film Festival By CAINE GARDNER Film Critic Philippe Lioret's Welcome is a powerfully moving film about love and to what lengths one will go to for love. The story is engaging, but what makes this film something special are the superb performances from its primary leads...
The Great Twinkie debacle of '09 Being the father of two small girls for almost four years now, I still cease to amaze myself. You would think in that time I would learn my lesson, but alas -- I found myself today in the Great Twinkle Debacle. I tend not to overload my kids with sugar, but from time to time I let them explore the finest in dining cuisine. ...
Is Disney going off the "Depp" end? Scouring the web, I noticed something that threw me back in my seat. No Johnny Depp for beyond "Pirates" 4? Could it be true? Surely not. I had to investigate. It seems that after Disney Studio head Dick Cook was ousted because the company wanted to go in a "different direction", Mr. Depp could be possibly reconsidering his role as Captain Jack Sparrow...
You have nothing to fear but ... By CAINE GARDNER Film Critic What do you get when you mix some of the most talented people working in the horror genre, directors and writers, give them an hour and a network? The result is the 13-episode run of NBC's Fear Itself, a superb four-disc collection that is sure to leave chills scurrying up your spine...
Statham's Crank 2 is a heart pounding thrill ride By CAINE GARDNER Film Critic Crank 2: High Voltage is the most outrageous, self-indulgent, pretentious, over-the-top spectacle possibly ever to be put on the big screen. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have increased the insanity a million-fold from the original pic and show how far two young filmmakers will take their vision, given the advent of cheap, high-quality technology. It's in your face and perverse -- I loved it...
Real life horrors revealed in Boot Camp By CAINE GARDNER Film Critic The most disturbing aspect of Christian Duguay's Boot Camp is the fact that places such as that depicted actually exist. Places that promise rehabilitation for troubled youths that are nothing more than entities of torture that do more damage than good...
