Michael Jackson, one of the greatsPosted Friday, June 26, 2009, at 8:48 PM
When Jackson's Thriller album dropped in 1982, I was seven years old and ready to rock. It was the soundtrack for my year and for years to come. I almost wore out a copy of "The making of Michael Jackson's Thriller" and am still proud to say I still know all the dance moves to the Thriller video. When news came in yesterday afternoon that Jackson was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, I was numb. I went on about my day, but a little voice inside my head wouldn't go away. It was memories whispering to me, forcing me to recall the past. And what a cool past it was. In addition to Thriller, I owned most every Jackson album and still believe to this day that the music produced from about 1978 until the early 90s is perhaps the best ever produced. More than that, he was an entertainer. I still hear people talk about where they were when the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan Show. To my generation, the question is "Where were you when you watched the Motown's 25th anniversary special"? I was at my home on Vine Street and I watched just to see Jackson sing. The song is going along fine, everything's cool, I'm loving it and then it happened; one of the single coolest moments of my life. Jackson spins, hesitates, looks at the crowd and unleashed the Moonwalk on us. I still get chills watching that clip. In music history, Jackson shares space with the greats. The top three in my opinion are The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson. Those three artists were able to transcend their music and make an impact on society that will never be forgotten. For me, Michael Jackson's life was something of a sad tale. I know there are a lot of negative feelings by some, but I view his life just as I've always viewed Elvis' -- lonely. I hope now that his soul is at peace. I encourage everyone to dig in your collection; find some classic Jackson 5 or any of his solo works and let the music take you somewhere. If you are like me, I guarantee you'll find yourself in a good place. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

"one of the greats"? Are you crazy? What has he done that has made him so great? Sang a few songs? Have sleep-overs with little boys? Going though millions upon millions of dollars on nothing but the search for self happiness? Here are examples of being "One of the Greats". A single parent working 2 jobs, scrimping, barely getting by and still raising children that respect others. A grown child who is taking care of a parent with Alzheimer's so they won't suffer the abuse of a nursing home. A working parent who lost the only income a family has yet still manages to care for the family. The list of "The Great Ones" can go on.. What did MJ do. Simply abuse the talent and the results of that talent that God gave him. He is not "one of the greats" !!!!!
Great work Caine! Some people only look at his personal life in the last 10-15 years and can't look beyond that. Sometimes when it comes to "the greats" (whether it comes to groups or individual artists) people tend to look at them not just professionally, but personally. Which is fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but in my opinion, you are looking at the artist, not his characteristic flaws of his personal life. When you look at his life as an artist, with or without the Jackson 5, he was a great artist and worked hard to get where he did. Some people need to look at the artist, and realize what a great one he was. May he rest in peace.
Michael's performances in his prime rivaled the Beatles. I don't know why people want to idolize a guy now that fits the profile of a pedophile.
He was amazing and inspired so many people and really advocated "change for a better place".
p.s. In this country you are innocent until proven guilty. Charges on him were dropped.
Seems peculiar that the charges were dropped after Michael wrote a huge check to the victim in the case. Hmmmm.....coicindence?
I think every kid in Caine's generation has a pic like his.
I AGREE, HE WAS A TALENTED AND SPECIAL PERFORMER. IT'S SO TRAGIC TO LOSE HIM. I LOVED HIS MUSIC AND OF COURSE THRILLER WAS MY FAVORITE! REST IN PEACE MICHAEL. LET HIM FIND THE PEACE IN HEAVEN THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE ON EARTH.
