It's the simple things in life that makes one happy. A smile, a laugh, maybe even the sound of rushing water. Over the holidays I took note of something else that makes me happy -- a Christmas tree.
Not so much the tree itself, but the light. A twinkling rainbow of happiness that welcomes you home and gives the darkness a twisted sense of a carnival.
Not only is it beautiful, it's strangely relaxing. After a long day during the Christmas break, the combo of a movie and Christmas light had me melting into my couch, breathing a sigh of relief.
So I've decided I'm going to try to convince my wife to leave our tree up all year. Not an extra week or two, but the entire year. Any way you look at it, 12 months, 52 week or 365 days, it all comes down to a full year of glorious Christmas cheer.
It might be a little weird in the summer months as people stroll around in their tank tops and shorts and they look through my front window to see a Christmas tree shining in all its glory, but hey, happiness is happiness. It shouldn't be limited to just a little more than a month should it?
I think we all should do it. Think of how awesome it is to be driving home and see houses adorned with blinking renditions of reindeer, Santas and presents. Even a house outlined with lights is enough for me. It's hard not to have smile creep across your face when you see some lights twinkling on the horizon.
So with the New Year just a few days away, I have my work cut out for me. Maybe I'll make my resolution to have 525,600 minutes of relaxing holiday cheer. My wife's always on me about keeping my resolutions, so it should work. Right?
