To the Editor: It's again that time of year when parents are buying school supplies and maybe new shoes for their children, while their children are anticipating what the next year in school will bring. As a retired elementary teacher, I can tell you there are also lots of things to be done at the schools before those students cross the thresholds of their new classrooms...

Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education at the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) has made the announcement that DOE has developed the Shopping Sheet (http://collegecost.ed.gov/shopping_sheet.pdf), a uniform template for financial aid awards encouraged for use by all U.S. colleges and universities for their financial aid awards beginning in academic year 2013-14...

The Cloverdale Emerald Command held a dress rehearsal on Thursday evening in preparation for competition in the Indiana State Fair's Marsh Band Day Competition, which takes place today.The competition will feature 45 high school marching bands from all over the state. ...

Registration for the North Putnam School Corporation will be held on Monday, Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Aug. 7 from noon-7 p.m. If parents are unable to register at these times, they are requested to call their child's school and make other arrangements...

County Jail Several people were booked into the Putnam County Jail recently. At 9 p.m. Steven Matthew Carman, 24, Fillmore, was lodged at the Putnam County Jail for two counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. At 4:40 a.m. Rebecca Godsey, 53, Greencastle, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia...

LAFAYETTE -- The Greencastle girls' golf team placed 16th among 18th team at the McCutcheon Invite Thursday. The Tiger Cubs fired a 467 for the Invite. Lafayette Jeff (Red) won with a score of 337, while Western's Allison Lindley won medalist with a round of 69...

CLOVERDALE -- Two days after a full round of golf at Oak Ridge Golf Couse, several Putnam County schools were back on the links again at Clover Meadows. South Putnam edged the host Clovers by four strokes to claim the Cloverdale Invitational ahead of seven other squads while North Putnam finished fifth...

Ongoing drought conditions in Putnam County and most of Indiana have now apparently spawned new criminal activity to worry about -- water theft. On Monday, a South 43 Water Corporation customer in Oak Ridge Estates northwest of Greencastle contacted Water Superintendent Jeff O'Neal about a device he discovered being placed on a flush hydrant near his home...

While the sizzling, record-breaking summer continues, we can at least close the book on a historic July across central Indiana. Weather officials say worsening drought conditions across Indiana further contributed to warmer temperatures that exceeded 90 degrees on 28 days while topping 95 degrees a whopping 19 times...

MANHATTAN -- A Clay County man who had been stopped by Indiana State Police and warned about speeding earlier in the evening was injured late Wednesday night in a one-vehicle accident on U.S. 40. Rohn T. Smith, 23, of Brazil was westbound, driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer, when he reportedly lost control of the car and it veered into the median west of Manhattan...

Greencastle Moose Lodge 1592 will host "Super Bingo" on Friday, Aug. 3. Early bird games are at 6:30 p.m. with regular games at 7:30 p.m. The kitchen will be open from 5-9 p.m. There is no smoking and the public is welcome. More people means a better payout...

A 24-year-old Cloverdale man, lodged in the Putnam County Jail for nearly two years without his case coming to trial, is expected to finally go before a jury this fall. Jared T. Robbins is accused of voluntary manslaughter, a Class A felony, in the Aug. 22, 2010 shooting death of Donald E. Lowe III, 28, Martinsville...

Anna May Wall, 89, of Pompano Beach, Fla., passed away on April 29, 2012. She was born in Greencastle. A memorial service for Anna May will take place from 3-5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at American Legion Post 58, Greencastle. The family invites anyone to attend this remembrance of Anna May's life...
