Final health wrap-up, glad to get to vote early, new job going well
Posted Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 3:45 PMFor what is hopefully the final health update for a long time concerning the Bennett household, my wife has finally recovered from COVID-19 and got her negative test results over the weekend. In reality, the doctors think she actually has been over it for a while and actually developed bronchitis (which has many similar symptoms) as a result of her immune system being compromised... -
The COVID battle continues in our house; four-car pileup in a drive-thru
Posted Friday, October 2, 2020, at 10:32 PMFortunately, I'm doing great in terms of COVID. My symptoms left long ago and have not yet returned. As I wrote earlier, I feel incredibly lucky. My wife is not in agony, but continues to feel miserable going into her three-week anniversary of symptom onset tomorrow (Saturday)... -
LIVIN’ THE COVID LIFE: The Aftermath
Posted Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at 12:39 AMHaven’t updated things for a few days, but my bout with COVID-19 appears to be over - and I have emerged victorious. Unfortunately, I have passed it on to my wife. She actually suffered a loss of taste (which I never had) and has general feelings of “blah” (not an official medical diagnosis). Her body temp and oxygen numbers are very solid, and we are hoping she continues to improve as she has the past few days... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: DAYS 7-9 (Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 14-16)
Posted Wednesday, September 16, 2020, at 6:41 PMNot a lot of huge changes early in the week. I am still coughing a lot, my wife still has a major headache. Got some good cough drops yesterday that have helped cut down on my cough a little. Both of our numbers on body temperature and oxygen still within good limits. ... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: DAY 6 (Sunday, September 13)
Posted Monday, September 14, 2020, at 1:57 AMSunday was a pretty normal, uneventful day. We both still feel below par, but nothing new or extraordinary to report. I'm calling that a W. Our body temperature and oxygen numbers are holding strong. My temps are in the upper 97s or low 98s, and my wife's are a little higher. ... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: Day 5 (Saturday, Sept. 12)
Posted Sunday, September 13, 2020, at 12:43 AMFor me, this was the worst day since finding out I tested positive for COVID. My temperature has stayed within acceptable limits, and is nowhere near the triple digits of earlier in the week. My taste and smell are still intact, and other than the occasional body aches (and a fairly normal touch of diarrhea again today) I really don't feel too badly... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: DAY 4 (Friday, September 11)
Posted Saturday, September 12, 2020, at 10:49 PMSlept in until about 10 a.m. My wife (a teacher) is still home from work on quarantine, and she's feeling no symptoms at all. I am happy for that. I would feel awful if I gave it to her. This day quickly becomes "Contact Tracing" day. I have no issue with that. ... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: DAY 3 (Thursday, September 10)
Posted Saturday, September 12, 2020, at 10:47 PMThursday was a typical for me these days. I sleep when I need to, which is a lot, and I work when I can in between. I did not have time or energy to prepare for the Friday newspaper earlier in the week, as I normally like to do, so I did the whole thing on Thursday. ... -
LIVIN' THE COVID LIFE: DAYS 1-2 (Tuesday-Wednesday)
Posted Thursday, September 10, 2020, at 1:48 AMDays 1-2 (September 8-9 I woke up in the middle of the night very early Tuesday morning with cold chills and shakes the kind of which I've never had before. I checked my temperature, and it was high. Pretty close to 100 if I remember correctly (up from normally 97.something.)... -
Selfishness even more rampant these days than COVID-19
Posted Friday, July 24, 2020, at 1:06 AMThere are a lot of good people doing a lot of good things these days. Frontline workers of all sorts, civil servant such as police and firemen, and anyone who keeps going to a job every day knowing their exposure to the public could be harmful to their health... -
'Hamilton' a one-time thing for me
Posted Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 3:35 PM(OK, this isn't sports but those topics have been done enough for now and the will we/won't we reopen debate will never end until they do or don't.) I am hardly an afficionado of Broadway musicals, but in the last half of my life I've gotten more into this genre. ... -
Symbolism is a matter of perception, even in sports
Posted Monday, June 15, 2020, at 11:24 PMSymbolism is a common theme in literature, whether it's deciding if the yellow brick road is a metaphor for riches in the "Wizard of Oz" or if the green light at the end of Jay Gatsby's dock in "The Great Gatsby" represents his hopes and dreams for the future... -
Updating potential re-opening dates for various sports
Posted Monday, June 1, 2020, at 5:12 PMTo be honest, not a lot has changed lately in terms of the status of re-opening various sports. That's not necessarily a bad thing, yet, but most organizations -- as they should -- are moving forward as if things will resume at some point. Obviously, a distinct change in COVID-19 numbers (aka the "second wave") could change any of these working plans... -
Saying a fond good-bye to the Class of 2020
Posted Thursday, May 21, 2020, at 1:07 AMWhen I took over my current position in the last week of April in 2016, the members of the Class of 2020 were still in middle school. With their recent (or upcoming, however you want to look at it) graduations, I was able to follow their high school athletic careers from start to finish. Obviously, the spring sports athletes did not get to finish their careers all the way through. But up to that point, the Class of 2020 offered a lot of great moments that we were able to share together... -
Common sense prevails as high school federation rejects shot clock
Posted Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at 3:00 PM1In this day and age when common sense seems to be lacking in many decisions from all parts of life, the National Federation of State High School Associations made a logical one recently when it voted down a proposal to add a 35-second shot clock to high school basketball in every state... -
Deciphering the return, or not, of sports in difficult times
Posted Tuesday, May 5, 2020, at 4:26 PMFor better or worse, I am normally pretty negative when deciding on potential outcomes of a situation. My glass is definitely half empty. I'm unsure why I developed this character trait (flaw), but it's there. Friday was a little bit of a difference for me as my wife and listened to Gov. ...
