With gasoline prices jumping nearly 60 cents per gallon around town, Kroger gas station had quite a line around 2 p.m. as the only remaining station with the morning price of $3.19. Most retailers in Greencastle had fuel for $3.19 as of Tuesday morning, but prices had jumped to $3.73 or $3.75 by early afternoon.

VEEDERSBURG -- The Greencastle boys' and girls' cross country team had solid races at the Fountain Central Grand Prix on Saturday. Each of the boys cut more than 30 second off their time from the previous race this season and the girls' team improved dramatically as well...

CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle volleyball team jumped out to an early lead in each set but failed to keep its rhythm, losing 3-0 at Southmont on Tuesday. The Tiger Cubs lack of consistency gave the Mounties wins at 25-13, 25-18 and 25-21. "We just need to find all of hitters on the same night," GHS coach Maggie Walters said. "We have some girls hitting well in one game, and then in the next game they're not hitting well."...

The Greencastle boys' tennis team showed off some of the depth and experience it gained last season during its first dual match of the year at home on Monday. The Tiger Cubs beat Edgewood 3-2 and picked up wins at No. 3 singles and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles...

WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The South Putnam boys' tennis team began its season with a second-place finish at the Viking Invitational Tennis Tournament this weekend. The Eagles got two matches from each player in the lineup, with the No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles team finishing second in its flight. Stewart beat his White River Valley opponent 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, then lost to West Vigo 1-1...

SEYMOUR -- The Cloverdale girls' golf team had its lowest team score of the season on Monday and finished second to Owen Valley in a three-team that also included North Putnam. Cloverdale's 217 was led by low scores by Harlee Fuetter (48) and MaKayla Moore (51). Owen Valley finished at 190. North Putnam's two golfers, Olivia Zarate and Jessie Cox both shot 58...

Open to ages 4-20, the first day of the Greencastle youth bowling season is Saturday, Sept. 7. Registration for the league is due by Sept. 1 at a cost of $17. CRAWFORDSVILLE -- The Greencastle boys' soccer team had one of its most active offensive games of the season on Tuesday, but Crawfordsville was up to the task of stopping it. The two teams finished in a 1-1 tie. Greencastle (1-3-1) got its goal from sophomore Zach Wilkerson in the first half with an assist by junior Sedrick Weinschenk. Crawfordsville answered in the second half when senior Josue Cardenas got a ball past senior Zane Miller...

TERRE HAUTE -- The South Putnam girls' golf team finished with a team-total of 230 at Terre Haute South on Monday. That left them 49 strokes behind the Braves. Senior Kyndra Boyce had the top score for the Eagles, finishing her nine holes at 51. Carlee Schlatter finished at 58, Allacyn Arnold at 60, Clair Perry at 61 and Alicia Haywood at 66...

PLAINFIELD -- The Greencastle girls' golf team's best is not yet enough. The group finished with a season best 215 at the nine-hole event, but lost to the Quakers, who shot a 183. Senior Liz Johnson once again led the way for the Tiger Cubs. She finished at 50 strokes, two better than teammate Lokysa Scheuermann. Junior Lauren Bridgewater came in at 55, senior Haley Cash at 58 and Alexa Newlin at 62...

The Greencastle girls' soccer team was forced to dig itself out of a hole on Tuesday, but their second-half run came up just short as the team lost to visiting Crawfordsville 3-2. Sophomore Hannah Brattain had both goals for GHS, both in the second, after the Tiger Cubs fell behind 3-0 before the break...

ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam boys' soccer team fell to the visiting North Montgomey Chargers 3-1 on Tuesday. Both teams battled the hot and humid conditions throughout the night. "I think we played alright," North Putnam head coach David Moeller said. "We had defensive lapses, which allowed those goals to be scored."...

It was a little late in coming, but summer seems to have finally arrived, right as the cross country season kicked into gear for South Putnam Tuesday. Temperatures rose above 90 degrees in time for the first meet of the season but the Eagles powered through to beat Cloverdale in both races. The boys' squad won 23-40 while the girls' scored a perfect 15 as the Clover girls did not qualify for a team score...

SPENCER -- North Putnam freshman Christa McRoy tied a school record by scoring four goals at Owen Valley on Monday. She held it for just a few minutes. Another Cougar freshman, Kaelynn Abner, picked up her fifth goal of the game in the 80th minute to set a new NPHS record in the teams 12-0 win...

Greencastle Elks Lodge 1077 is again supporting the youth in the Putnam County community with three recent donations provided through a grant from the Elks National Foundation.

The world's only one-eye golf tournament is set to return to return on Saturday, Sept. 14. The 20th annual Clody's One Eye Golf Scramble is set for 11 a.m. at Old Hickory Golf Course. The charitable tournament is again being promoted by Greencastle Elks Lodge 1077...

INDIANAPOLIS -- The 11th reunion of Transportation Corps of Vietnam veterans, known as "The Gathering" was staged recently in Indianapolis. State Rep. Jim Baird (R-Greencastle) joined 20 plus members of the 523rd Transportation Corps as well as their families for the week-long event, honoring and remembering those who served or gave their lives during the Vietnam Conflict...

CLOVERDALE -- A Phoenix man is in the Putnam County Jail following his Monday night arrest for the transport of illegal aliens. At 8:32 p.m., Indiana State Police Trooper Yan Dravigne stopped an eastbound 2001 Mazda van near the 45-mile marker of Interstate 70 for a traffic violation, following too closely...

A routine Indiana State Police check on a disabled motorist Tuesday afternoon ended with the arrests of a pair of Vigo County men wanted on warrants in nearby counties. At 1:30 p.m., Trooper Yan Dravigne stopped to check on a disabled 2005 Dodge utility van near the 43-mile marker of Interstate 70...

Barbara L. Torr, age 82, of Greencastle, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. Born Nov. 8, 1930 in Eubank, Ky., she was the daughter of Lee Oden and Ila Parker (Acton) Stites. She was a graduate of Greencastle High School. Barbara was a homemaker and with her husband of 65 years, Clifford A. Torr Jr., had owned and operated Torr's Restaurant for several years...

PLAINFIELD -- The Cloverdale golf team competed against Plainfield and Monrovia at Oak Tree Golf Course on Tuesday. The Clovers finished third with a team score of 232, behind the pace of the Quakers (194) and Bulldogs (199). MaKayla Moore and Harlee Feutter tied for the Clovers lowest score. Both finished at 53. Abbie Speas was third on CHS with a 60, followed by Izzy Wardlow (66) and Kelsey Nees (71)...

DePauw women's swimming and diving head coach Matt Ense has announced his resignation to become the assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach at Division I University of Cincinnati. The national search for Ense's replacement is underway with plans to fill the position by October. Assistant coach Alyssa Swanson will direct day-to-day activities during the search...

Coming into its Wednesday night match 0-3 and trailing Sullivan 21-12 in the first set, Greencastle's volleyball squad looked to be in for another long night at McAnally Center. CLAY CITY -- The Cloverdale volleyball team lost at Clay City on Tuesday, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-6. The Clovers (0-4) had contributions throughout the roster. Senior Lindsay Robson led the team with 26 digs, junior Jessica Winders had 22 assists and junior Lexi Branneman had 14 kills...

LIZTON -- The North Putnam volleyball team lost at Tri-West on Tuesday, 25-20, 25-5, 22-25, 25-17. Senior Madi Asbell and sophomore Taylor Nauert led the Cougars with seven kills each. Senior Kelsey Reed had 12 serve attempts and one ace. Senior Bethany Wiatt had 11 serves and led the team with 24 digs from her libero position...

INDIANAPOLIS -- The local interest in mixed martial arts isn't as high in central Indiana as many other parts of the country -- the sport is as big as football in some places -- so the crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Wednesday wasn't universally swayed in any direction or bias...
